I am wanting to buy a framework 13 125H - but it is out of stock on the configuration. However if i go into the individual products supposedly they are all in stock. Is their any reason not to order all the parts separately. Thanks
Welcome to the community!
I’ve never added it up myself, but I’ve heard that ordering all of the parts separately would cost significantly more than ordering an entire machine.
maybe, unless I’m missing something it is only 2 pounds more
If that’s the case, the only reason would be that all of the parts haven’t been put together and tested. In the majority of cases, that shouldn’t make any difference at all. ![]()
So not really a risk then?
I’d say not. A very small risk that you might get a dud part and have to return and exchange it, that’s about all.
That’ll be because Framework is no longer producing them as complete laptops. Just the replacement parts. The real risk you’ll run into is that of fasteners; screws and the like. I’m fairly certain those will not come with the parts because it’s assumed you’ll be replacing a part that already has the necessary screws. Contact support. They’ll likely be willing to send you the screws gratis if they can.
There have been other threads that explored doing this and I can’t recall the conclusions at the moment. But I do recall some minor pitfalls.
Ok thanks, I’ll have a look.
You can buy the fasteners separately. They are indeed not included by default.
Something else I just thought of. You might wish to check the warranty policy on parts vs a complete system as it may be different. In the USA it is but I don’t know about Great Britain which I assume you hail from.
Ah yes, I forgot they created a SKU for the screws to solve this particular problem.
Building from parts is a little more expensive and quite fun. I’ve done it.
Another aspect of getting parts is the resell.
There is generally only demand for a few of the parts if you, say give up on the project, and ever decide to try to sell the parts.
People might buy mainboard, keyboard and display, but not much else.
People are unlikely to buy top or bottom covers because the don’t tent to break.
I.e. you will not get all your money back if you try to sell the parts.
