Which kernel are you using? 6.19.10-200.fc43.x86_64 (64-bit)
Which BIOS version are you using? 03.05
Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series)
Title. I believe I know the issue: I have one of the extremely early frameworks (and had usually avoided this issue by powering of my laptop before slapping it onto a backpack). Mainly want to know what I should check to ensure nothing was damaged by this event.
Primary concern is my gpu fan seems to squeak when ramping up now + I see some artifacts rarely on my screen (but these seem to exist even without the dedicated gpu, so im not too concerned? Also just seem to be prevalent from my googling)
Also, my fan “grid” on the dGPU looks visibly bendy now.
I am comfortable opening the laptop if needed, but im not quite sure what I would be looking for to inspect for hardware damage.
I have run glmark2 without issues on the dGPU (no visible flickering, etc) The squeak noise was present during this test.
The flickering (green spots) seems to mostly happening if I quickly scroll down on firefox and/or when opening windows on my desktop (the fedora “start menu” is the most noticeable one, clicking on it and quickly searching somewhat consistently causes this). This seems to happen regardless of the dGPU but I haven’t tried physically removing it from the laptop to be certain.
The visual artifacts might not be related to the heat your machine experienced in your backpack. You might try setting ‘amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x410’ in your kernel parameters - there’s an existing issue with AMD firmware that causes an assortment of minor display distortions across Linux distros. There are countless discussions about this in the forum if you’re interested in some backstory.
Also, if you update your input module firmware, there’s a fix that will stop sleeping laptops from waking up due to phantom touches when the machine is closed. This can help protect against some overheating issues resulting from a machine waking up in a confined area.
Does this include the early models? I remember reaiding something a while ago about this being a mainboard issue (something about the keyboard getting pressed by the screen), but I could be missremembering (i took the lazy route of powering off and not worrying about it)
Also I would love some backstory on the visual glitches, I remember not having them up until recently which is weird.
Done w/ update will return in a few days to report if it did anything.
Worth noting that (from the few minutes I have been using it) the flickering seems to have worsened post (bios) update, which is interesting, as I don’t think that shouldve mattered?
Just swapped a 7040 out along with its wifi card for the newer wifi card and a AI 7 350 mobo. Updated the BIOS. Had previously updated the input module firmware prior to the mobo swap and had suspend working well on the 7040 with its most current BIOS. Tried suspend and put it in a backpack. Ended up running the battery down to 13% severely overheated from the hour in the backpack let the fans run for a while to cool it down hard killed it with a long power key press. Came back up pressing the power key again to turn it back on but now also experiencing artifacts of the mouse pointer on screen in Wayland Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS. Have the original GPU expansion on this machine, Radeon RX7700S. I sadly have no solutions for you as of yet but it seems we are in a similar state of affairs.
