Hello. I’ve sent a support ticket to this same effect, but I thought I’d post it here too in case anyone else can help to answer. I pre-ordered a limited batch X9 Framework 13 Pro on the same day the pre-orders opened, and at that time I also ordered a stick of LPCAMM2 memory from an external source. At the time, the official memory compatibility list had not been published, so I ordered the only new module I could find that was above the rated speed of 7467 MT/s. I am so excited. Today, I saw some discussions on the framework subreddit claiming that the exact type of module I ordered (Lenovo-branded Ramaxel RMCA1000MBB2JCF-7500 32GB) fails to post/reach memory training, or otherwise doesn’t work in some way.
Is this a real problem, and if so, is it something I should be worried about?
If there are compatibility issues, will a patch be issued to enable functionality?
I understand my memory is not in the validated module list. I understand LPCAMM2 is a very new standard, I understand the memory shortage probably makes it a challenge to source modules for validation. I understand Framework isn’t operating on a massive scale. I’m willing to be lenient for these reasons, but considering any other option (including another laptop) would likely be a thousand dollars more expensive now than when I placed my order, I’d be pretty devastated.
I received a response from Framework support, but they didn’t exactly answer any of the questions I asked, and what they did say wasn’t very encouraging.
If they do a BIOS patch to fix compatibility (not clear if that’s even a possibility), they would post about it at this link. No timeline as to when that would happen or even when we’ll know more.
I’ve opted to add an official 32GB module to my order as a precaution, and they say I can return that module if they end up issuing a patch to make it work within the return period, but to be honest this whole thing has really killed my excitement. I might end up returning the laptop if it turns out to be over $1000 more expensive than when I originally bought it.
It’s unbelievable that you can buy new LPCAMM2 with the correct speed spec from Lenovo and it won’t work with your Framework laptop. Especially considering the mess with RAM in the preorders. I really hope they are looking into this.
Good communication about Ramaxel support would probably also help reduce support tickets in the long run.
Out of curiosity, where are you based? If you are in the UK or EU, you should be able to use a 14 days cooling-off period. There is an exception for custom-made products, but I am not sure this would qualify even if you went down the DIY route, because the laptop can be trivially disassembled from its constituent parts.
I went with the DIY, and I’m in Canada; I don’t think we have anything comparable. I can’t return the Lenovo memory anymore.
I really hope we get some sort of communication that they’re at least aware of the problem and trying to fix it. Enough people have posted about their modules not working that a warning on the validated module list seems warranted to me.
In the past, FW has not mentioned ram modules that do not work.
This is proven by comparing the amd 7040 ram list vs the ai 300 ram list.
They both are supposed to take the same ram chips, but there are noticable absences from the ai 300 list and the absences have been proven not to work on the ai 300. Mainly discovered by users upgrading from 7040 to ai300.
I think it would have been more helpful, if they listed some ram modules as “tested and do not work”
For curiosity I did a search for my forthcoming RAM, DDR5-5600 - 64GB (2 x 32GB), on eBay UK. I paid £810 for the pair with my Pro order. If I sell the RAM as new, I’d make a profit, based on prevailing prices, but if I were to install it into the new laptop and then change my mind, I’d have to sell as second-hand, and that might produce a loss.
I’m surprised that LPCAMM2 would currently make a loss, even second-hand; there is literally not a single stick of it on eBay UK right now.
The problem there is who is going to buy it? Any laptop that it would fit tends to come with RAM already, and there aren’t that many machines around at the moment that us it.
A completely fair point. I had imagined LPCAMM2 machines would start emerging in the second half of this year, but I wonder if they might be on hold until compatible RAM starts to emerge.
Following the ongoing discussion about Lenovo/Ramaxel LPCAMM2 compatibility issues, I wanted to ask specifically about the Micron variant.
I purchased a Lenovo LPCAMM2 module separately during pre-order (before the RAM crisis and before Framework published a validated modules list). My module is:

Reported by Lenovo distributors as Micron-supplied (as opposed to the Ramaxel-supplied variants 5M31L87415/416 which appear to share the same P/N in some listings)
Based on the community discussion so far, all reported POST/memory training failures have been with Ramaxel-manufactured modules (5M31L87411, 5M31N59947, RMCA1000MBB2JCF-7500). I haven’t seen any reports either way about the Micron variants (5M31L87462/463/464).
My laptop is Batch 18, shipping November. Before I get too deep into planning:
Has anyone with a confirmed Micron-supplied Lenovo LPCAMM2 module tested it in the 13 Pro?
Are there known-working third-party Micron modules (e.g. Crucial-branded) that others have booted successfully?
I have the same Lenovo-branded (5M31L87464) LPCAMM2 module (Micron) that I bought elsewhere. My laptop will arrive next week and will let you know in this thread if it works. I am fairly certain it should
That said, my friend has the Crucial branded module and it definitely works on his Batch 3 FW13 Pro
This is actually absurd for us limited batch people. We get charged literally tomorrow. The earliest I could have known about this is yesterday. So I have basically until the end of the day to decide if I’m going to cancel my order or not because I’m not paying 800 dollars for RAM. I absolutely refuse. I don’t hold out hope Framework will make any kind of announcement about E0 ram before the end of the day.
This is absolutely horrid product management. There are likely going to be thousands of people in the same boat who purchased lpcamm modules when they ordered their framework pro in order to not pay framework’s outrageous prices. If I had known at the time I needed an E1 module I would have only had to pay 10s of dollars more. Now I find out literally ONE DAY before I’m going to be charged that my E0 module won’t work and I will have to spend 800 dollars to get the same module that cost me 300 when I preordered my laptop.
Not to mention two E0 modules were on framework’s limited compatibility list. This entire thing has been bumbled by Framework. It was no big secret Lenovo had LPCAMM modules out in the wild and that preorder people were snatching them up before they all went away. At any point between months ago and now Framework could have said something to help alleviate the damage but no, let’s let the community find out and make sure the damage is as bad as it can possibly be.
I knew better than to trust products with cultist like fanbases, but the specs were exactly what I was looking for. I knew better so I blame myself in the end. We live in a time period of horrendous consumer protections, so you can’t trust the “good guys” either. So dissapointed in this consumer experience.
EDIT: I decided to add the 16GB module to my order. I’ll get the laptop but remain a salty customer and I will definitely not be an early adopter in the future if at all. The good news is according to eBay I can sell this e0 module for almost double what I paid for it. I’m unsure if it’ll actually sell for that, but that appears to be what they are listed for.
