I was replacing the thermals for the CPU and popped the ZIF connector out from the power button ribbon and now I can’t find it anywhere. I know it shouldn’t have been that hard to move the connector, but it was not moving and I exerted too much force causing it to snap off and will need to get a replacement.
Where can I get a new one?
Edit: I currently have the powerbutton ribbon taped to hold it in place, but becuase it gets hot the glue on the tape is giving way and making it rather difficult to turn the computer on.
I’m presuming you mean the tiny latch / lever which you flip up to release the cable? Those things can indeed be delicate. I’ve broken a couple here and there, mostly “drawer” type rather than flip-up type. Once you break off a flip-up type, it’s most likely finished. Even if you found it, it’s not likely to work well enough, if it even goes back on at all. The pivot point is just so tiny that it’s likely to be wrecked.
They are not available separately, from anyone, afaik. But, if you really wanted, you could get a whole new connector & take the lever off it. I believe its 0.5mm pitch, 10 pin ffc/fpc connector. They are available on ebay and aliexpress. You’d want to cut the body of the connector to free the lever without deforming its pivot point. I don’t know how likely it would be to fix your connector well, feels like a long shot. The pivot holes on the body might have been deformed. Or the brands that you can get inexpensively just don’t exactly match.
Honestly I’d just recommend finding some high temperature tape to hold your cable. Or bite the bullet and get a new fingerprint reader. Those flip up latches, always slowly lift from the middle, never ever from either end. Manufacturer datasheets say that’s how they should be opened.
Ah thank you for the reply and for the size of the connector. I was searching around to see if any I could find something and reconnect it, but I think your right that its just hosed.
I’m not sure if the fingerprint reader would have a spare included, it looks like these come with the main boards pre-attached and I’m betting that even if it does come with the reader it may not fit on the mother board anymore.
The strange thing is this connector was already in the up position when the computer shipped to me and at that time I was viewing the how to disconnect the fingerprint reader, the video was not clear enough in the guide, it is now though so the next time I get a different main board I’ll remember its a flip and not a pull up connector.
