I don’t know what’s going on with my mainboard it has fried twice. I don’t want to keep replacing it. This is the second time within 3 months it has done this. If anyone could let me know why I’d surely appreciate it. Don’t know if this would have to do with not having my factory charger anymore. I been using the same thing that I use to charge everything. I just ordered the 240w charger unfortunately I won’t be able to use it until I replace my main board again. It was the amd 740 series.
A 3rd party charger can cause damage on other devices even if they are made for laptops they may give to high Amps which damages the mainboard. So i would say give this a 3rd chance and replace mainboard again and use 240w official charger from framework aswell and see if it fries again if nothing happens. Then it was your 3rd party charger causing the damage, just because it may work on other devices does not mean it will work on everything.
I was planning on trying this one more time. I may just upgrade to the ai main board. Any thought or reviews on the new main boards. I love the upgrade ability of the computer I just don’t want to have to keep going through them.
I just got a Framework 16 myself with AI 300 series cpu. I went with the 12 cores and 24 threads one and will be setting it up properly today since it arrived yesterday to my house.
Hi.
Do you have any more details regarding when it “fried” ?
What devices were plugged in at a time?
Problems can be caused when multiple devices try to supply USB PD power to the laptop, and some external displays, or docks try to do that.
What is the exact make / model of the devices plugged in?
If those devices were externally powered, did they have 2 or 3 pin plugs.
If you give a more detailed description, we might be able to help narrow down the cause.
As a general rule, I find that devices brought from places like aliexpress / china tend to not be entirely compliant with safety aspects that they make out they are.
For example, one apparent CE marked device I got had a UK plug. The UK plug is a 3 pinned plug. The device came with a 2 pin plug, with UK sized Live/Neutral pins, but no Earth Pin. It is physically not possible to plug a 2 pinned UK plug in, because the Earth Pin is needed to unblock the L and N pin holes. So, although the item was marked CE, it most definitely was not compliant with CE marking.
It was actually a ugreen charger. It’s a 240w max one port but 500w total. It’s the only reliable brand 240w max I could find from a decent company. So what happened is I could smell something burn up or melt idk what it was but my usb c port on the computer didn’t work. So I swapped to the others to keep a charge while taking a class. It kept a charge but when I shut it down to put in my backpack before I left to go to work I noticed the charging lights were still on with nothing plugged into it. So I left to go to work when I got to the hotel pulled it out to watch some Netflix and it would no longer come on. Same thing that happened to me last time. I love to tinker so I’ll always probably be a fan of framework and just replace my parts but I’d like to at least understand why it was happening.
I did have a hub hooked up to it as well to display on my lg monitor.
Please let me know how you like it and did you get the nvidia graphics card?
No,
I went without dGPU for now. Heck what this laptop is quiet on zorin os 18 pro.
I checked cpu load and it’s like 1-5% max and fans are on but I don’t hear them, I can thought feel a light heat coming out from both vents.
But yeah, when buying a charger check for amps aswell not just watts. Ugreen might be giving more amps while it’s 240w. So that might be why you had burnt smell from 1 port since it was producing higher amps than laptop could take. After that it did damage by shorting the motherboard.
So hopefully when you get framework 240w charger and swap motherboard. It should solve the issue so it won’t give more amps than it should ![]()
It’s 48v5amp that should be good when I was researching the chargers I made sure of that. Gaming with the 185w charger would bring down my battery so I wanted to try a 240w. I wonder if it was a power surge or something of that nature that got me but from here on framework charger. Anyway the framework 240w is being delivered to my house soon so all I have to do is get my new main board. The computer does get pretty hot without a cooling pad when under heavy load but other than that I love the performance in this laptop. I have 64gb of ram and now I upgraded to where I have 10tb of storage too with the ssd. It’s nice being able to change all the parts especially if you plan on making it better but don’t have the money at the moment.
Sorry mybad, mixed amps with volt.
I meant that you must make sure volt isn’t higher than what laptop itself supports. 240w sure does 48v but as long laptop supports 48v it’s fine, but i checked ugreen as you said you used and they do not have any 240w charger only 200w, 300w, 400w and even 500w but that might be issue? You used 300w on laptop and some where there charger outputs higher volt than what laptop could take and it caused the burn and then shortage later on.
Are you sure 500w doesn’t output more in one of usb ports 250w or something?
This would be the one I got that is 240w max on one port
Unfortunately, we don’t have a full schematic of the laptop, so there is no way to tell what is causing your problem.
If you sent the mainboard to a repair shop, they might be able to tell you what failed, and why.
It could just be unlucky, and a component failed randomly both times and it has nothing to do with your charger.
But, if exactly the same component failed both times, then there might be a common cause.
Some user did say using 3rd party charger including ugreen one is unstable on framework laptop so that might be why burn and shortage happened to you?
They suggested also to use official 240w charger.
Also like one user said here, take the main board to a repair shop and let them inspect it and if they also said it is shorted by the ugreen charger then that’s the cause and I still think it is since it happened twice. So yeah ![]()
Well he ordered framework 240w charger this time so if this doesn’t happen with that. Then it must be the ugreen charger doing it unfortunately ![]()
Another user on forum mentioned that using a 3rd party 240w charger is not stable on framework laptop.
Man I really do appreciate y’all’s opinions and input. I didn’t expect to get responses so fast when it came to this.
My build was
Amd 790 processor I believe
64 gb ram
Initially I had 1.5 tb that I upgraded to 10 total tb
The amd graphics card
I love the computer and I hope y’all enjoy y’all’s as well. I just got to get to the bottom of why this is happening so it doesn’t happen again. So I work away from home and pretty much live in a hotel and I ended up leaving my original 185w charger somewhere idk which is the whole reason I had to go with other options. I could have ordered another but I know framework said it was capable of charging at 240 watts which is why I had to try it out.
What did you have plugged in when the board failed?
I am not convinced the problem is the charger. It could be some other device that was plugged in at the same time.
Once you get your 240W charger from framework and motherboard, give us some update how it goes if it happens again. If nothing, then it must of been your ugreen charger doing it, since some times even if it’s a known brand it can still cause damage onto some devices. Even if it meets max voltage amount ![]()
