Framework Laptop 16 has two DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets. These support up to 32GB each, enabling 64GB of DDR5-5600 memory, and we’ll be offering 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB modules.
Therefore please allow me to have a quick question: Could you disclose yet whether this upper limit (32GB each) comes from the CPU/mainboard, or from to DDR5 SO-DIMM modules?
Or, let me ask alternatively for clarification: Assuming one day I’m to acquire DDR5 SO-DIMM modules with a larger capacity like 48GB or even 64GB each (I think there’re manufacturers planning to do so), would I be able to install two such modules onto Framework Laptop 16 and expect a higher amount of usable RAM accordingly?
I believe this will be platform dependant, for example on the FW13, the intel version can support 64GB max, and same with the AMD version (officially) so you can stick 96GB in the AMD version and it should work.
If we look at the historic precedent of the ddr4 era, I’d say probably. The mobile processors that were out back then tended to list 32gb (dual channel 16gb) as the max memory but once 32gb dimms showed up they worked on most of them.
