Microphone noise issues on AMD Framework 13

Hey all, the microphone on my AMD Framework 13 is completely unusable due to the amount of white noise being generated. This issue is present with both the internal mic and multiple wired headset mics, but not present with Bluetooth headset mics. I connected the same headset via both methods and it only had the issue when wired, which makes me think it’s a sound card issue.

I’ve already contacted support, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this same issue and what they did to address it? Particularly if picking up an audio expansion card could solve the issue.

I’m running Fedora 40 with the 3.05 BIOS and all firmware up to date.

What’s the gain set to for the mic in sound settings?

I’ve been mostly testing it with my mic gain set between 25% and 40% in the OS. This doesn’t seem to have any bearing on how much noise my mic picks up, but rather, it only makes the entire input of the mic quieter. The noise always ends up louder than my voice regardless.

That sounds about right so it should rule out clipping from over-amplification.

If you’re so inclined (it may end up being suggested by support anyway), you could try re-seating the audio board connector:

Edit: Just to check on the software side, you’re running a vanilla Fedora audio stack, meaning pipewire/wireplumber, right?

Hi, just to add to this:

  • I’ve been using the mainboard alone, sans audio board. Noise on the “internal mic” line has been visible from day one in the volume pop-up in Manjaro linux
  • I ordered the audio board once I knew I wanted it (mostly to not need my USB sound card)
  • I just installed the audio board and the line noise on the mic is still present
  • I haven’t yet tested microphones through this connection…

Here’s a screencap of the mic lin (just imagine it constant fluctuating around there):

Edit: adjusting the gain from 100 down to 20 does at least flatten out the graphical representation, haven’t yet tested actual audio.
