Midplate screws and stripped bottom cover thread

Hi folks,

I have two issues:

  1. The captive screw drives are getting a bit stripped. Can I replace captive screws or need to replace the whole midplate for $99?
  2. The captive screw #11 in the midplate spins infinitely and doesn’t bite, which indicates to me the thread has stripped from, presumably, a bottom cover ($139). Is there a known fix?

$240 seems to be quite a large amount to fix basic screw issues in the most frequently removable parts if the only option is replacement.

Thanks!

One lesson I learned early was not to over tighten the screws as I realized I was taking the machine apart too often for various reasons (test various SSDs, RAM, cleaning etc..).

That’s the thing - if the screws don’t get tightened enough they get loose if laptop is used about 12-16 hrs a day/7 days a week. It’s not an exclusively Framework problem either. It’s just Framework is designed to be serviced constantly and upgraded.

I think those are the same screws they sell in the kit from the Marketplace. :screwdriver: The little kits are like $5 USD. I ordered a spare set of upper and lower screw kits for just such an occasion in the future. :mechanic:

Why?

Mostly because if I bought them; there is a good chance I will never need them; if I didn’t though the laws of “Just my luck” would dictate the need for them and I would not have them on hand! :person_facepalming:

The captive part (don’t know the technical term for it) would just have to be installed on the new screw.

Similar to how the top and bottom screws on a US electrical outlet have a little metal thing that holds them from falling out when installing the outlet. :zap:

Are the captive springs sold separately as well, in case I break one?

I do not think they are in the screw kit. I think they only come with the whole cover. Just do not loose one!
