Multi monitor setup

Hi Folks,

I just recently got my Framework Desktop and I am trying to setup a multi-monitor setup. However only the HDMI port seems to be working. The display ports on the back don’t seem to work once windows or linux loads. The display port works when showing the bios screen but once window or linux loads the monitor doesn’t detect anymore except for the HDMI port it works fine. I tried using DP to DVI and DP to HDMI cables for the other monitors but to no avail. I have updated the bios to 3.03 and installed the driver pack. Is there anything I am missing? I didn’t see any options in the bios for enabling ports or anything like that, anyone else experiencing this issue?

I had the adapter dp to HDMI and it didn’t work. Eventually gave up.

Mine worked right away on Fedora 43. I am using a dp 1.4 and a dp2.0 cable. No adapters or anything. What OS are you running? Have you tried any other OS?

I got dual monitors daisy chained into a single DP 1.2 connection and this works. I don’t recommend using any adapters just stick to DP or HDMI cables. Sounds like it might be an issue with the driver, it should detect multiple monitors are plugged into the back of the device.

I am not sure what DP version i am using and I assume the cable is a DP 2.0 as I just bought it. They are DP to HDMI cables no adapters. I have tried windows 11 25H2 with the framework driver pack (didn’t work) and also updated the adrenaline drivers from AMD site (didn’t work). I also installed Linux Mint 22.2 same thing. I did a google search and found the issue maybe that the ports may not be DP++, which means I would need an active adapter? but I couldn’t find and specs or docs confirming this on frameworks site.

That is odd. I have dual monitors: one HDMI and one DP. The DP monitor is prioritised as M1. Worked on install of W11 26220

Was your’s a clean installation of the OS or did you move SSDs over from another PC?

Is your second monitor of DP is it a DP to DP cable? or is it a DP to HDMI?
yeah it was a clean install from a USB media creation tool.
Also left a portion on the SSD to partition a linux Mint installation. And when I boot into it, Mint also cannot detect the monitors that are plugged in to the Display Ports.

My DP cable is DP-DP and my HDMI cable is HDMI-HDMI

What monitor are you using on the DP side? What DP cable are you trying with now?

I am using 2x BenQ 1080p displays they only have DVI, VGA and HDMI ports on the back of them
so I have tried 2 x DP to DVI 1.8 meter cables, 1 for each monitor
also I have tried 2 x DP to HDMI 1.8 meter cables, 1 for each monitor
and switched them up so I have tried 4 cables in total

Which model BenQ?

I’m using a Dell U3223QE which has a DP 1.4 port

They are old and don’t have DP ports on them. They are BenQ GL2460-B displays.

I suspect that is the issue

Framework support confirmed the DP ports on the Framework Destkop are not DP++…meaning I will need an active adapter if you are not going from DP to DP as it doesn’t have the circuitry do the HDMI translation. Active DP cables or adapters have this circuitry. It’s a first to me, I guess all other video cards I have used in the past had DP++ as cables just worked. I ordered a Active adapter but will have to wait and see if it will work.
Thanks for the replies.

Had the exact same issue, ordered an active cable, and that works now with no issues.

As you say the DisplayPorts are NOT DP++ so you must have an active adaptor.
Apparently DP++ is a firmware thing, so you never know this might change in the future?

Very interesting about the firmware thing. That would be cool.

I finally got my setup working … The first active adapter GL-020 Glink actually didn’t work, it was a cheap adapter, not sure why it didn’t work I suspect it really is not active.
The second adapter is an active Polywell DP to HDMI, it worked. So if your active adapter doesn’t work its worth trying another one.
