I purchased the original power supply that the framework unit is based on because I needed the extra length of cables for a specific case and it is a very loud unit. Think blow-dryer. I can absolutely see now just how well the modifications to quiet this thing were implemented. I think I’m going to have to put this fan in it to see what kind of improvement can be made.
I love my FW desktop. but this fan issue when working in a quiet environment is so distracting. Really hoping they have better curve management as part of the next bios update.
As an update, i recently swapped the fan from the DC 10mm Noctua model to the PWM version.
Have it connected to the sys1 header on the mobo, sensor set to mobo ambient with 15-50% PWM range and always-on enabled.
Seems to be running at ~700rpm baseline which is essentially silent and the PSU stays acceptably cool now.
The bios update won’t change the curve for the PSU fan! Only way is to replace the PSU or to “fix” it with an external fan which is more silent …
that is unfortunate. In that case it would be great if FW would sell a different model of PSU.
Has anyone had an update from Framework? Last I heard was in Feb when my issue was “passed to engineering”.
Nah. “They’re aware and investigating”
In typical Framework fashion™ complete silence since months.
My bet is on them just announcing a completely redesigned replacement PSU one day ![]()
I’d be more impressed with them if they just admitted this.
After having poked around the issue for a few months i eventually fixed this by replacing the PSU fan. (firstly via a fan replacement, then via a fan with PWM i could attach to a mobo header for control)
I think a hardware mod or revision is the only possible fix here.
I’d respect them more if they just admitted they made a mistake, the denial of it grates…
I actually really wanted to buy the Framework Desktop but this thread made me rethink, to those of you who have the problem do you regret your purchase ? Thanks in advance
Whilst this issue was mildly annoying, it was never a dealbreaker.
I love my tiny quiet gaming PC that sips power, provides a decent gaming performance and has an absolute monster of a CPU in reserve for when i need it for other things.
Even stock, the PSU noise was only annoying relative to how quiet the rest of the PC was. Versus a normal PC you’d never notice the PSU fan at all because it’d be drowned out by all the other fans. The PSU noise is only really an issue when the CPU fan is at 0rpm.
More than 6 months with the noisy fan and TBH, I don’t regret the purchase even if I’m considering to change the PSU fan for a Noctua model as other users shared in this post. Getting closer to summer in 2 months, I know that it will start to make more noise due to higher room temperature. But still, it does the job for my purposes because all the hardware works 100% with Linux.
I don’t regret purchasing it, but I only lasted a day before I replaced the built-in PSU fan. The issue isn’t that the fan is loud, it’s that the fan makes an annoying BZZZZZZ sound and comes on when the machine is otherwise idle.
However, my guess is that the solution I posted here is likely sufficient and a lot less risky. Basically, even if you do get annoyed by the PSU fan, there are solutions that don’t require PSU surgery and/or a 3D printer.
