I’m stoked to be getting a DYI FW13PRO this week. However, I’m having a hard time deciding on the right NVMe for it. I greatly regret saving $30 on a Gen3 drive instead of getting the Gen4 version. Because the FW13PRO supports Gen5, I’m considering upgrading finally. However, after doing some research, I’m wondering if I should be worried about the heat from a Gen5 drive. Anyone have opinions or links for good drives for laptops? Is it even worth it in this case?
Given the current state of the storage market I would personally rather keep using the Gen 3 drive that I already have than buy a new one.

Well, my Gen3 2TB drive melted when I put it in… Glad I had a spare 512g laying around! I think the old drive had been dropped so I’m hoping it was just the drive that was bad and not an issue with the laptop.
I’ll probably just bite the bullet and get a Gen5 to clone.
Well, I was a dummy and didn’t take the plastic off the thermal pad on my DYI FW13PRO.
@Framework please update your guide (it’s not there now) to include this step for the DYI computers. Pretty sure it melted one drive and destroyed another. I probably should have checked first, but I’m pretty upset it wasn’t included in your guide for those who missed it or are ignorant.

According to this it’s intended to be there and shouldn’t be removed, and they’re updating guides to that effect. You should contact support if your board is frying SSDs.
The DIY-guide gives a red hint, to not remove the plastic.
But every YouTube video I saw until now, where someone installed a nvme, they peeled the plastic off… (Last one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR6TSe5Rv9s&t=409)
I think most experienced people will not read the guide in just do as they are used to

Well, I know nothing then. Luckily my current drive (third one) has been flawless, expect it is only 512gb. Now I need to decide if I want both kidneys or buy a larger drive.
You’re def not the only one, that’s why people spoke up in that post and the guides had to be updated. I am not sure why two SSDs died on you, though.
Yeah, that’s definitely strange. Even without a thermal pad, I think most SSD controllers will thermal throttle and slow down if they have poor cooling.
Yeah, some were pulled from decommissioned laptops, but the 2tb SP worked in a different Framework 13 laptop a few months ago. Hopefully I’m the only one whose drives got damaged.
Oem drives should even more be able to handle not being cooled.
I have definitely seen ssds throttle and even drop out from not getting enough cooling but straight up die would be a new one.
