Now that all the benchmarks are done (for now at least), I updated to the new BIOS (4.05). I have the 7840HS motherboard. So far everything seems to be working. I ran a couple of the benchmarks again (not all of them, LOL) and the numbers look good. No stability issues so far.
I have the 3.06 bios, and the nvidia fix, but I’m still getting the same issue.
Is there something else I’m missing? @Filip
You did also try to reset the BIOS and/or do a battery disconnect within BIOS to completely reset the EC? I did write some basic troubleshooting steps in this guide: Troubleshooting steps for the Framework 16 OCuLink 8i board made by Terrails · GitHub
And to confirm, which CPU are you running?
Hey, I think he meant SmartShift. I had the same issue and turning that off fixed it.
Hello Kyle! I appreciate all of the work you have done on the benchmarks and selling these m.2 to oculink adapters. I saw the etsy link but it said it was sold out. Are you currently out of stock?
If you are out, do you have any ribbon cable suggestions online or something that could suffice for now? I will be getting a F16 soon. Thanks again for everything you have done for the Framework community! ![]()
Long story, but short version is that the manufacturer decided to just take my design and cut out the middleman (me). Based on what the manufacturer was charging me and the other associated expenses, it just wasn’t worth me trying to continue selling them on my own.
Although I hate that the manufacturer did what they did, I still want OCuLink on FW16 to be available to everyone, so…
I am sorry to hear that, Kyle. That is extremely unfortunate.
Will this adapter suffice just fine? What made the difference between it and what you had done? I apologize if I am making you repeat yourself but I am genuinely curious. Thank you for everything you have done again for all of us here! ![]()
Does Amazon have no process for taking down such listings. I don’t want these ******** to get a single penny for the hard work you did.
I guess I am confused and maybe you could assist with clarity. Are these listings just people reselling the components that Kyle had made? If so, that is completely nefarious and I do not support that at all. Please let me know. Thank you.
Here’s a quote from earlier in this topic.
It is Kyle’s design they’re using.
Thank you! I had read through a bit of the topic already but wanted to be sure I was getting up to date information.
Absolutely not okay at the end of the day. I would prefer not to get this design from anyone other than Kyle. I do understand that Kyle doesn’t want to work on it anymore either due to the time and money it takes.
I had a friend suggest an oculink ribbon cable. Any proper ones on like that work well for the F16? Thanks a bunch for the info! ![]()
I wouldn’t risk a ribbon cable. I appreciate the sentiment about the situation, but please don’t sacrifice your setup. Ribbon cables are a PITA; they can lead to PCIe errors and can cause the expansion bay to get stuck. The custom M.2 adapter is cleaner and I shipped about 150 of them. I only had one person reach out with a possible issue. I offered to ship a replacement, but they were working with Framework because they weren’t sure if it was the dual M.2 board, the interposer, or the M.2 adapter. Basically, I have no confirmed “bad ones”.
Do you perhaps have the source of your peg boards? I am trying to find peg boards that could fit my GPU, but I haven’t had much luck finding something around the ~40x30cm range.
I ordered it from AliExpress a while back, but the link is dead now. It is roughly 36cm x 25.5cm. If I recall correctly, the listing said they were 35x25.
I also got them for $12 each. When I search for similar ones, the price seems to be quite a bit higher. I’ll keep looking, but at least while searching I did find pegboard hooks that seem like they could be really handy for hanging my headphones on. ![]()
It’s a shame. I do have updated models for the SFX eGPU enclosure, but they won’t do folks much good without the pegboard sides.
Some new photos. Here’s the “back”.
And the “front”.
Someday I might reprint the honeycomb panels to make them a little more rigid. You can see that they bow a little.
I recently tested out an RTX 3080 that is 318mm long and is a 2.5 slot card. That length was very close to the max that would fit. Sadly, it didn’t quite work with the x8 adapter (shows up in lspci but driver won’t load). I will be testing out a 2070 as well, and then testing both with the x4 adapter. I am running the latest BIOS, and my RX 9070 XT works great.
Edit: Found a listing at Walmart. Still looking…
It still turned out pretty awesome I must say. I still need to figure out an enclosure for my set up. It has been an exposed frankenstein for so long. I was waiting for the design from one of the folks in this thread to 3d print (can’t remember who it was as it has been so long) and updated files never came. So I’m not sure what to do.
Thanks, that gave me something specific to search for and I did find it on Amazon UK for an okayish price compared to other sources, although it probably still ships from China judging by the shipping time and it being handled by a 3rd party, but the shipping is free to Germany.
If you find the pegboard and want to give my design a try, here are the links to the designs in TinkerCAD. You can download whichever 3D model suits you best, and copy the designs to fine tune them better than I have.
OCuLink board supports (3 of these; use standoffs - M3 x 6mm + 6mm)
Enclosure back and GPU support
Hopefully the explanations of all the pieces makes sense. ![]()
As I mentioned earlier, the honeycomb panels could probably stand some extra support, especially “across the gap”, to avoid the bowing. I will probably add that in at some point (maybe this weekend).
Edit: Clarified use of standoffs with board supports.
Got the pegboards a few days ago and finally assembled it. Some screws were a bit tight, but that might’ve been some loose tolerances or me doing it wrong, but I have managed to assemble the whole thing.
I’ll probably further adjust it to my liking now as I want to get access to the internal switch on the board as well.
