Physical Fan Specs Request

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but none of the other categories seemed to fit either. I’m looking for information on the Framework 16 expansion bay fans. Can anyone tell me:

  • What type of plastic the base, (not the blades), is made out of?

  • What type of connector is used on the fan board, the pin pitch and connector type, or even better an actual part number?

Thanks.

The plastic the housing is made of is a bit odd of a request. It could be made from different plastics if they are made in more than one factory.

The pin connector is something that could be looked up on a site like DigiKey, Mouser, etc. or lookup the catalog from someone like amphenol.

Other than the curiosity, mind sharing what this information is useful for in this instance?

This could have been posted in the Creators area too. More detail specific users frequent that area for information like this.

I’m having to quite frequently remove the expansion bay, unscrew the fans, and clean them due to hair and dust accumulating in the shaft, resulting in slow, overheating fans, grinding noises, etc. At one point, the left fan was running at 3k rpm, and the other at only ~500 rpm despite being set to the same speed. The fan bearing on that side is now discolored from overheating and I had to re-oil both of them after carefully cleaning them out. That fixed the issue, only for the same thing to happen less than a week latter.

I have had dozens of laptops and desktop computers in the same environment over the years, some with very similar fan/heatsink designs as the framework laptop, and never had any issues like this. I have no idea what it is about this laptop that seems to make it clog so easily.

I plan to glue or tape a 500 mesh filter screen on the top side of the fan and on the bottom of the laptop, but I’m still working out the specifics. So far, as long as I can work out how to secure it to the fan and the bottom of the laptop, it looks like this should work.

The connector isn’t too important, but would allow me to make a breakout board to test the fans outside the laptop.

The type of plastic matters so that I know what type of tape or glue to use. I wouldn’t expect the type of plastic to vary drastically between factories if they are being made for the same OEM, but I could be wrong.

Should I repost this over in the Creators forum?
