Distro: Nobara Linux 39 (fork of Fedora Linux 39, not sure if I should post here or in other-distro)
Kernel: 6.8.12-200.fsync.fc39.x86_64 (64-bit)
BIOS: 3.05
Model: Ryzen 9 7940HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
Even as I’m writing this, my laptop (running on Nobara’s performance mode) is discharging – I have LibreOffice, Firefox, Spotify, and System Monitor running at the same time. Even seconds after login before opening any active programs, the battery reads as discharging. Less than an hour ago when I ran Warframe and entered a mission, the computer shut down completely. This is the first time this has happened.
I have replaced the USB-C cable between my laptop and 180W charger, and I have not treated that cable well, so I wonder if that is the source of the issue. Regardless, I want to make sure I’m covering all my bases.
Even if the laptop was entirely unplugged, unless the battery died (hit 0%, or is faulty) the laptop shouldn’t be shutting down. The expected behavior is that the processors slow down to a point that the battery is able to power, and then drains over time. My gut says something is wrong with the hardware, either related to the charger/cable, the battery, or both.
Note: Under high load (e.g. gaming) it is expected that the battery drain when using the dGPU. It should not, however, shut down on its own.
“either related to the charger/cable, the battery, or both”
Sounds to me like I’ve got some troubleshooting I need to do… and I should find a solution to falling asleep that involves leaving a device other than my laptop on and plugged in overnight.
And yes, I recognize how stupid that is in retrospect, hindsight is 20/20, I brought this on myself, yadda yadda.
Update: opened Warframe again, ran a mission, no issue until I shifted my foot a bit, forgot where the cable was, and it disconnected and reconnected in less than a second. I think the issue is the cable.
Still gonna get an MP3 player for my sleep sounds, though.
And you have verified this usb-c cable is 240w cable?
I purchased an Insignia 240W USB-C cable from Best Buy (maybe that was my mistake, living in a state without a Micro Center sucks) – if you have other suggestions, I’m open to them.
This may be worth a support ticket.
If you open a support ticket, they will ask you to test this on an officially supported distro.
And official psu/usb cable, no? This appears to be a psu issue.
Not an official Framework USB-C cable, at least not anymore. The cable which came with the laptop broke entirely (again, due to treading) and I had to buy a replacement. The replacement has been faulty for a while now, and this was the first time the computer shut off completely. One moment I was loading into a mission in Warframe, the next I was staring at a black screen with the power light and keyboard backlighting off.
Recommend checking to see if you can replicate this on a Fedora/Ubuntu liveboot. If you can, it may be a hardware issue (either charger or laptop itself).
