Putting a Framework Mainboard in a Classic ThinkPad T430

Hi Framework team/community,

I’m planning a YouTube project where I want to take a classic ThinkPad T430 and turn it into a modern laptop while keeping the exterior almost completely original.

The plan is to retain the original ThinkPad keyboard, TrackPoint, chassis, and hinges, while replacing the internals with a modern Framework mainboard, modern display, storage, USB-C charging, etc.

I’ll be designing the custom hardware and parts myself, while recording the entire process.

I think the project fits very well with Framework’s focus on repairability and customization, and giving people more control over their hardware.

I’d also love to see whether Framework might be interested in providing a mainboard for the project. If there’s a better contact or route for creator/project collaborations like this, I’d really appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I have already tried sending an email to media@frame.work, but it was unable to go through, which I assume is caused by lack of access.

Thanks!

hi, assuming framework aren’t interested, you could have a look at the community market (also here on the forums), here you might find a mainboard for cheap near where you live.

Thank you! I’ll check and see!

hi, you might want to contact them via their developer program

Hi, I would suggest you to simply start the project. You could 3D print the mainboard to demonstrate the mechanical aspect of the project, which would show that you have the skills and motivation to make it happen. Similar projects have been discussed on this forum. Framework mainboard in T430 would be great!
