Recommendation: Modular Inputs, Cool but prone to issues

I like the concept of modular inputs, and I’m sure it works often, but after getting my new Framework 16 I’ve had nothing but issues with the trackpad and keyboard.

This was meant to be my new work laptop as my boss had been using a Framework 13 now for a year or so and loved it. I think though the experience for him was a lot better partly because the keyboard and trackpad module is one whole unit and so is less prone to these weird issues where contacts don’t line up or make good contact with the pins of the mid plate. From a business perspective, I would have gladly selected a less customizable option if it meant it would be more reliable.

So that’s my recommendation really, offer a single module option with a focus on reliability for those of us who don’t really need customization but would like the larger laptop / a discrete graphics card for heavier workloads.

Alternatively, make the modules more reliable. These are flimsy little plates, they’re going to bend and warp and displace. The magnetic design employed for the keyboard seems to work well, so I don’t understand why the trackpad seems to have such a wildly different design allowing it to float away from the pins. Idk, I’m no designer, just a frustrated customer.

Regards.

If you don’t like modularity, just put all the modules in how you want them the first time, then never change them again. Problem solved. I can never understand how there are people that exit who don’t want choice.

Reminds me of when the Gnome project decided like 10 years ago to remove all the customization from Gnome….that’s when I had to switch to KDE and never looked back.
