You know - maybe on a future version of the Desktop, like with an APU that has more PCIe lanes they could not just run USB 3.2 based expansion cards, but they could potentially run 4 lanes of PCIe to an oversized expansion card.
That would be modular and you could have a 7GB/sec SSD (or 14, if this happens in 2028 when PCIe 5.0 based SSDs are common) or USB4 v8 80Gbit, SFP56, Occulink, etc. This would fit with the notion of “PCI express is the future” if AMD and Intel will start giving us more lanes to work with on their future APU designs by 2028 or so.
