Hi Framework team, can we know when the review embargo ends?
Does a review embargo typically end before or after a product ships out to users? Or does it vary between companies?
Usually before unless you are nvidia and act like douchebag and put the embargo as the same day that sales start.
Fuck Nvidia.
!!!
Are you batch 0?
I’d certainly expect reviews out in the wild before the actual Batch 1 to Infinity ship. It’d be scummy business tactics to not do this.
Batch 0 is a bit weird though, I fully expect them to ship literally as soon as they can, since that was their promise for the special promotion. Might be at the same time the reviewers also get their stuff.
Reviewers already shipped a few days ago. With shipping preparation mails going out the last few hours for batch 0 I think we’ll see reviews pretty soon. Might not even be any embargo at all, just takes time until videos are made.
Nice to hear about the reviewer shipments, I didn’t see them mentioned yet. It does indeed sound like they are just shipping Batch 0 ASAP, and reviewers didn’t have time for anything yet.
yea I’m batch 0
Looks like the review embargo has been lifted: Framework media coverage — articles, news, reviews and videos - #14 by xoe
Excited about the battery life. 4 hrs under heavy load, but 10 hours watching videos? If that is true that’s awesome. Curious to see how that translates to the i3, as all review units were i5.
I don’t expect much of a difference.
Just saw the ShortCircuit video. In their practical test they got more like 5 hours. Good enough for what I’ll be doing. The 10 hrs numbers were from benchmarks from two other reviews. Not really true-to-life I guess.
Overall quite happy with the reviews so far. Might be even better than my initial expectation. Excited to play around and put some GNU/Linux on it.
There’s a noticeable pattern among the reviews that say this laptop’s price puts it out of reach of the initial audience, kids and schools, and more towards adults looking for a nice-looking secondary device. I have to admit, they absolutely got me there.
I would love to see higher-power (while still-efficient) motherboard options for this laptop further down the road, so I hope Framework can cater to my crowd a bit if the education angle doesn’t work out. I ordered a FW12 because I liked the form factor and repairability, but also because I can live with the trade-offs and price. (I wouldn’t mind paying extra for it to become an ARM/RISC powerhouse in the distant future though)
It’s disheartening to see how cheap other manufacturers can make their school laptops by discarding repairability and sustainability, and the only true low budget option in a post-tariff world is buying a used or refurbished laptop and hoping it lasts. Though I can see the argument of having Framework laptops being common on used markets after another 5 years or so of premium user customers being the company’s end goal, much like how ThinkPads for bigger businesses became the gold standard for used personal laptops
Looks like framework 12 is fantastic.
As a parent I can say that the long-term viability is very appealing. Even if the initial cost is steeper than the low-cost competition, upgradeability of individual parts is huge and will likely beat buying several cheaper devices. Especially if anything breaks. The ruggedness compared to flimsy competitors helps too. TBH I don’t think the price is that outrageous if you factor in the whole school cycle of a kid.
Another huge factor is customization with colorways and expansion cards. If you compare to other devices FW12 looks so much nicer. Would not be surprised if FW just started a trend in the laptop segment. The first FW12 I bought for myself
If any of my kids devices break we’ll very likely get more FW12s.
Speaking as member of the clumsy demographic, a little bit of ruggedness is appreciated. Already bent and poured coffee on my FW13 and while those weren’t catastrophic repairs, it did make me want for something a little cheaper to fix/replace as realistically anything I’m toting around is going to get banged up eventually.
For me it’s consolidating multiple devices into one when I travel, I already have a FW13, a pixel tablet, and a steam deck, carrying all 3 of them in a backpack gets pretty heavy just for some light computing, indie/classic games, watching TV shows/movies or reading books.
