Safely flashing EC firmware on Framework 13 Pro

Which OS (Operating System)? Windows 11, but it’s not Windows related.

Which Framework product: Framework 13 Pro Intel

Hello,

I just got the 13 Pro upgrade and I’m again encountering the keyboard behavior that caused me to modify and flash my EC firmware a few years ago.

I’m hoping to avoid the pain of holding little WSON probes in place like last time, and I’m looking at my options for safely backing up my EC firmware and re-flashing it when I have the fixed updated copy built.

Does the 13 Pro (not any chromebook edition, if there is one) support Closed Case Debugging (CCD) via the USB-C port? And does that have the capability of backing up and flashing the EC firmware?

My second choice would probably be find someone to help me micro-solder the JECDBG header.

My last choice is to use the probes and ASProgrammer and stuff.

Does anyone have answers or advice about the best way to do this, a few years after my original post? Thanks.

You could always use ectool.efi! ANNOUNCE: ECTool.efi for the Framework Laptop :: HowettNET

It may not be able to detect Sakura’s flash layout, but it can still be coaxed into working. I’ll get an update out that makes it a bit easier.

Same as ever, though: ectool.efi flashread 0 524288 fs0:\ec-good.bin

CCD is supported but not for flashing.

If you do end up adding a connector for JECDB, you can flash it from there. More details at GitHub - FrameworkComputer/FrameworkDebugger: Debugger Firmware Multitool · GitHub

I was wondering if you were still looking at this board. Thanks for the reply.

You said CCD is supported but not for flashing, but the link you posted about the Nuvoton talks about using the UART pins to flash. The CCD exposes UART… but not the same one that the JECDB header does?

I definitely successfully used ectool to backup and flash last time (thank you!) but I want to cover my bases in case of bricking, so I need some non-ectool way to flash too.

Hah, yep, still kicking around!

CCD exposes UART but muxed through the PD controller, unfortunately, so I believe you can’t apply the pulldown as needed to get the monitor into flash mode.

cover my bases

Makes sense  Alas, I think you will need JECDB for that.
