Screen display issues on both Fedora and Windows

Which Linux distro are you using? Fedora (I do dual boot with windows 11 but default turn on is fedora, I use fedora 90% of the time)

Which BIOS version are you using?04.04

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? Ryzen™ 9 7940HS - (AMD Radeon™ RX 7700S)

Here is the list of screen display issues:

  1. when I drag (or fn+F8) my brightness after about 80% it goes darker instead
  2. Every so often I get a flicker of a black screen or I get a flicker of a screen tear (static)

Any suggestions on what I should do about this?

Do you get these screen effects equally with both operating systems?

Good q don’t use windows enough but from the use so far it does pretty much the same not as often tho… why?

Well, if the behaviours are different, it would point to a driver issue; if the behaviours are the same, it might point to a hardware issue.

makes sense maybe I’ll spend a day on windows to double check as its been a while … tbh its been a like this since the beginning when I brought it but didnt think too much about the occasional flicker but the brightness thing is new

Have you tried reseating the eDP cable on the motherboard? This sounds like a hardware/cable connection issue to me. It’s known that some members of the community have had to reseat their eDP cable.

I can confirm to have the same issue with openSUSE Tumbleweed since about 3 weeks ago. At about 97%, the screen gets dimmer rather than brighter. If I load a very old kernel, it will work properly.

Edit: it looks like it will be fixed in Linux Kernel 7.1.9

If the issue is also occurring on Windows, I’m not sure it’s an issue with the kernel.

I suspect two issues are happening on Linux, and only one on Windows. Sounds like that kernel update will fix the software/Linux one :tada:

It has been fixed in 7.2.0-1-default which has been installed with Tumbleweed 2026-08-25.

That issue is also fixed in Fedora 44 KDE/Plasma using Kernel Linux 7.1.10-200.fc44.x86_64
I can confirm that it existed with Kernel 7.1.8-200.

I just upgraded today and yeah, the issue is now fixed for me. I don’t have a copy of Windows to test with right now so I don’t know why OP is getting the same issue with Windows but at least it’s all fixed in both openSUSE Tumbleweed and Fedora.

Thanks guys appreciate the feedback! I spent some time on windows 11 I don’t have any brightness issues and so far no screen tear/flicker issue. Although the screen tear/flicker is a bit trickier to detect for windows as it just randomly does it in Fedora, need to spend more time on windows to really see if its ok… I think the path forward is just updating the linux kernel, I have 7.1.8-200 and it judging from your responses 7.1.9-200 & 7.1.10-200 are working fine.

UPDATE: I upgraded it to 7.1.10 and its fixed my brightness issue. But going to have to wait on the screen tear/flicker I get randomly, only time will tell.
