Long time no see, gang. So, I have recently been using YAFI (Yet Another Framework Interface) [GitHub - Steve-Tech/YAFI: Yet Another Framework Interface · GitHub](https://github.com/Steve-Tech/YAFI) [Flatpak] on Linux Mint 22.3 running the new 7.0 kernel to have a battery limiter that I wouldn’t have to reboot every time to use because I have it sit on the charger for long periods sometimes. At first, I had no issues, but now the system only charges at ~20W, and I thought that maybe it was just the EC being weird, but it didn’t work even after a battery disconnect. What’s a good solution for this? (charge limiter is turned off right now)

The weirdest part is that if I leave it plugged in long enough it will spike back up to 60W charging and then drop back down to 20

It also drops to 9 watts sometimes\*

I’m also just fine with removing the flatpak if the udev rules are removed if it is necessary to do so. Are there any better alternatives that won’t bork my charging?

Might be some kind of interference from YAFI? Try uninstalling YAFI (and it’s daemon if installed) and using `upower` to read the charge rate

Your voltage when charging at this low power is 16.2V - there are four cells, which translates to 4.05V per cell. That is the agreed upon threshold at which li-ion chargers switch from constant voltage to constant current so at to not destroy the cells.

You’re below 60% instead of the usual ~80% when this happens - **possibly one or more of the cells is/are showing signs of wear** and thus have much higher resistance, which outside presents as higher than usual voltage when charging, kicking off the switch to constant current earlier than usual.

At 503 cycles it’s not totally unexpected. You can ride out the rest of this battery’s life like that and maybe even get another 500 cycles until you reach 70% capacity.

Edit: Sorry for dismissing your post. Your general idea is fine. However, different models have different charging, discharging and cell degradation characteristics so the exact voltage, current and cycle counts to degradation can differ.

Firstly. The Li-ion on this machine doesn’t behave like that (4.05V). It charges at 1C (85W) below 4.15V, then switch to 0.7C (59W) after that. The constant voltage of the battery is 4.4V per cell

Secondly there’s no magic probe that can detect the “true” voltage within the battery itself ignoring the internal resistance, so the higher the resistance the higher the voltage at a given “true” voltage during charging. However since the voltage is only 16.2V the open-curcuit voltgae (OCV) is actually lower than that, which is normal, not a “sign of wear”.

OP is complaining about the charge rate, not the capacity. 77.88Wh after 503 cycle is very healthy. The reason of slow charging is either BIOS or YAFI

I found the udev rules for YAFI, so how would I remove these to fully remove YAFI?

Sorry I’m not an YAFI user. You should follow the instruction manual of this program for uninstallation. Also, uninstalling the program doesn’t guarantee to fix the slower charging, however, doing so can rule out one factor. Then we can move on to EC configuration and USB-C PD negotiation

Now, I just need to let the percentage drop enough to try to charge again and I’ll see if I fixed the issue. If not, I’ll see if a battery disconnect will fix it.

Discharge to below 60% because 14.7W is normal at 17.5V

Meanwhile you can try using CLI software, `fw-ectool` for example. Do not modify anything at first, just use `$ sudo ectool chargestate show` to display the battery target charging current and the charging circuit’s current
