Well, I was running into an issue (finally) updating my Gen 1 keyboard and numpad from 0.29 to 0.31. I was using fwupdmgr, and constantly getting the following error:
failed to detach: failed to wait for detach replug: device <DEVICE> did not come back
What ever could be wrong for it to fail so many times in a row? Well, I then tried to manually enter the UF2 bootloader, and noticed that the RP microcontroller never mounted as a USB mass storage device–how peculiar.
That’s when it struck me. I just performed a system update, including a kernel update. After a kernel update, USB drives often don’t show up as mountable devices.
So, if you’re having trouble updating (for the few who may not have done so), a quick reboot to load a new kernel may do the trick
