Stuck on Logo - Framework Laptop 13

Hallo!

What happened: After keeping my laptop in sleep not plugged in for a night, it seems to have powered off.

The issue: When I press the power button, the Framework logo shows up and nothing else happens; and if it’s plugged to a charger, the LED turns off for a second and turns back on. Pressing the power button turns the laptop/screen off immediately. I can repeat this instantly and the laptop has the same behavior.

What used to happen: I press the power button, the Framework logo shows up for a few seconds, and I am met with my laptop’s GRUB selection.

What I tried: I have kept it charging for 10 minutes, and nothing. Tried with a 45 W charger and then a 100 W one. Should I turn it on and let it discharge completely? Or should I keep it charged for a prolonged period of time? I also looked for guides on the Knowledge Base, but I found nothing helpful (yet), sorry.

Details:

  • Which OS (Operating System): Linux, but it is not relevant here
  • Which Framework product; Laptop 13; which generation of CPU: AMD 7040 Series (AMD Ryzen 5 7640U to be specific)
  • Display: 13.5" 2880x1920 120Hz 2.8K matte display
  • Wi-Fi: RZ616 Wifi

Please let me know if more information is needed.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you have access to another computer, prep a Live distro on bootable external USB storage. Ideally pick a distro that is supported by Framework.

If you have Secure Boot enabled it might be best to disable it before you attempt to boot from the USB device.

Insert the bootable USB device while the FW13 is powered off. Turn it on and spam the F12 key until the boot menu appears. Select the USB and attempt to boot. What happens next will determine your course of action.

If it boots you can use familiar tools to diagnose and repair any issues with your nvme internal drive. If it does not you could update this thread and others might chime in with suggestions. Alternatively you could open a support ticket. If you do that, be sure to mention the live USB experiment and the distro you chose.

Thank you for replying.

I think my laptop was fine from the beginning, and the OS was in fact relevant because it seems that my default GRUB broke. I can access the BIOS and boot menu, and if I choose the default/main one (Bazzite), black screen (and nothing else, just like I described in my post).

Luckily, I had Mint installed, and I can boot into it just fine. However, I don’t really know what to do now. I’m thinking of:

  • resetting my default GRUB (for information, I had customized it months ago without issues, adding a theme and setting GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT from "console" to "gfxterm")
  • or adding Bazzite to Mint’s GRUB

but I’m not familiar on how to do either of those.

I fixed it! I will post a guide soon to my solution.

The link above was the guide that helped me.
