Stuck SSD module fastener screw on 13 inch 7640U

I received my 13 inch AMD 7640U laptop DIY edition today. I unboxed everything and began putting it together. Everything was fine except the SSD module fastener screw is stuck. Completely stuck. It didn’t budge for the included screwdriver nor my iFixit screwdriver heads. I even tried my Vampliers which did nothing. Every other screw appears fine, but the motherboard is now useless without being able to put storage in. I’ve seen some people post the same exact issue regarding the 16 jnch laptop – has anyone had this issue with the 13 inch? If so, how was it resolved?

UPDATE: Well, I managed to get it out by twisting with pliers, but it ended up pulling the screw housing out as well. The screw is somehow still very firmly stuck in the housing. Very disappointed in the build quality here. For a laptop that is supposed to be easy to repair, it ironically has the most difficult screw I’ve every encountered and what appears to be pretty more QA. Not thrilled.

UPDATE 2: Framework will be sending me a new mainboard! I really appreciate the quick responses and resolution from support after I sent photos and communicated my problem. Looking forward to switching mine out. Hoping the screw won’t be a problem. Really want to underscore how great and quick support from Framework has been. While I don’t love that I had this problem, it’s great they addressed it quickly. I’ll give one more update after I receive the new mainboard.

Yes, that seems like a common problem and is probably why Framework replaced the SSD screw with a plastic pin in the Framework 12.

I had the same problem, but got mine out with a Wera TX6 screwdriver. (The bigger bit allowed it to create a better grip without stripping).

Thanks for the response! Good to know it isn’t just me and that the problem is fixed in the newest laptop. Unfortunate these older ones still have this screw.

I’ll have to buy that screwdriver!
