Hi!

I’m having trouble using my eGPU dock on my Framework laptop.

Basic info:

Which Linux distro are you using? Arch + CachyOS repos. Last update today (2026/09/01)

Which kernel are you using? linux-cachyos (znver4) 7.2.2-1

Which BIOS version are you using? 4.02

Which Framework Laptop 13 model are you using? AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370

eGPU model: TH3P4G3

GPU model: Radeon RX 480

Symptoms:

The GPU dock works normally when used with another laptop (System76 Lemur Pro 10 with i7-1165g7 — product page) with a similar configuration (Arch Linux, non CachyOS), connected via TB3.

The dock supplies power to the laptop, but the GPU and other peripherals attached to the dock are not detected.

On boot, the dock powers up, but then during the boot process it does a couple “flickers” where it powers down and up again. When I’m able to log in, if I lsusb/lspci, the dock is not visible.

What I tried already:

Using different ports (top-left and top-right).

Disconnecting all expansion cards and plugging the dock directly.

Disconnecting all peripherals from the dock.

Searching the Framework forums for solutions from other users.

I link in the next post (new users can only add two links per post!) the boot log from journalctl (truncated after I reach the graphical session, and omitting some VPN messages), in case it may help.

I’d greatly appreciate any pointers, or suggestions on how to continue troubleshooting!

What does “dmesg” and “boltctl” say when you plug it in.

My TH3P4 does work fine with my 7840u fw13.

I didn’t have boltctl installed, so I installed the Arch bolt package and the dock, eGPU and peripherals were immediately recognised.

For what it’s worth, I don’t have boltctl on my other laptop, but I guess that’s because I have an Intel CPU?

I’m now trying to figure out how to run my graphical session on the eGPU and external display.

When I launch sway, the external display doesn’t get activated, and in the console I get these error messages:

My other laptop doesn’t get these messages, and uses all-ways-egpu to disable the Intel iGPU. I have tried installing all-ways-egpu on the Framework too and replicating the same configuration, but it doesn’t help. I also have the same vulkan-related packages installed on both laptops.

Interestingly, when I open wdisplays, the utility sees the external display, but it’s not enabled, and if I try to enable it I get an error “The display server was not able to process your changes.”

If anyone has further pointers, they’re much appreciated, otherwise I’ll keep trying to figure things out!

Maybe try if you can use the egpu at all before doing more invasive stuff like running the de on it, what does DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep renderer and DRI_PRIME=0 glxinfo | grep renderer return?

Is the gpu in lspci? What does dmesg say when you plug in the egpu?

So, if I run glxinfo on the tty session, I get an “unable to open display” error (that should be normal, right?).

If I launch the Sway session, hotplug the eGPU and run DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep renderer I get

I was also able to launch Steam and a game using the eGPU, so basically at this point the only thing that doesn’t work is external display output! And, to disambiguate, the display is attached to the eGPU, so not directly to the laptop.

That is to be expected

Odd I was doing some testing with external displays on polaris (sway on igpu and egpu) recently and that worked fine (except hotunplug with display connected but that is to be expected).

Well those do look fairly normal, the unplug definitely looks less unhappy than if you tried it with an active display on it. If the display actually worked it would have taken your sway session with it XD.

have you tried plugging in the display after connecting the egpu?

I know it’d get quite angry if I did a hot-unplug with an active session : P
When I do that on my other laptop (after switching to the egpu with all-ways-egpu) the system just crashes haha

Tried replugging the display after the eGPU is connected! But it doesn’t work sadly.

Even if the compositor is running on the igpu sway gets really offended if a gpu with an active display gets unplugged.

I have found the issue, though! The problem was that I had an override in my .bash_profile/.zprofile for WLR_RENDERER=vulkan. I unset that, and the external display worked!

So, for future readers, the main takeaway was that I needed to install bolt. After that, it’s been mostly a matter of re-understanding my own configuration (:
