I love my Framework Desktop and carry it back and forth between home and office quite a bit. I think it’s reasonably robust, but I’ve been using a camera bag to protect it in my backpack. The camera bag is a Neewer NB-PT. It’s slightly larger than the Desktop+handle and does an ok job - you can make the fit tighter using the velcro padded dividers that come with the bag (designed for an SLR plus lenses, so pretty configurable). I was wondering if anyone has thoughts on an alternative, or has any opinions about the matter in general?
I use this thing. The plan was to carry they DESKTOP + small BT keyboard + a portable screen and a mouse in that case.. and it fits, but a 17inch screen I bought to use with the desktop does not fit, So I either use a thinner 14inch or plug it to a 27inch screen I have at the office and use the 17inch at home.
I think your camera bag solution is basically a better idea, but I’m often traveling with a camera bag full of cameras, so no room the the Desktop.. So I needed something to go on the shoulder.
You probably needed gorilla arms to lug it around though.
Brings back my days as a computer tech with a toolcase that I wouldn’t even try and lug around these days.
The best bit of Ethernet analyser software I came across was from Novell, back in the days when having a Novell server was a ‘big thing’. Could use any Ethernet card that could be put into promiscuous mode IIRC.
Changed my mind about the camera bag. It’s 16cm thick, when only ~10cm are required, so was taking up a lot of extra volume then stuffed into my backpack. Instead, I found a plastic food storage box (the kind with clip on lid - a clip each side) that’s approx 30x21x11cm, and lined it with some padding (6mm neoprene with adhesive backing). Really nice - fits the FW desktop, with handle, perfectly. Now it’s in a waterproof hardshell protective case with no rattling that only takes up about 6.5 litres (the label on box says 6.3), total weight about 3.5-3.6kg.
For the people who take the desktop on the go, back and forth - how often do you do this, and how delicately do you obsess when you transport it ? I’m feeling a little insecure about the prospect of transporting a desktop as opposed to a laptop where everything is (well, in theory) a little more clamped down/unlikely to shake apart during a daily commute
Twice a week, sometimes more. My commute involves 20 minutes of walking and 20 minutes on a bus, so the desktop goes in a backpack (in the aforementioned box, plus neoprene padding, so it’s snug and pretty well protected against impact and shaking). Hard to say how vulnerable this desktop is versus a laptop - I think the biggest difference is the large heatsink maybe putting pressure on the motherboard and potentially stressing tracks or solder joints. I reckon if I was just walking out of the house, hopping in a car, then walking into an office I wouldn’t have made an effort with a case etc. But, one of the reasons I went with the Framework desktop rather than another small desktop was I know I can get replacement parts very easily (I also needed the compute cores and the thermal design).
