Transfer to a new laptop (HP -> Framework)

Hello!
I bught a new Framework laptop (AMD Ryzen™ 5 7640U) to replace my 2016-old HP Omen (Intel(R) Core™ i5-6300HQ + Nvidia GTX 960M), which runs Tumbleweed & BTRFS.

Ideally, i would like to simply plug-in my current SSD and RAM sticks, and be done.
What are the odds I would end up with an un-bootable system by doing so? Is this “likely to work” or more “unlikely to work”?

  1. So what RAM does the HP have DDR4 I think
  1. On the SSD if it fits ?? If it doesn’t boot what ? Scrub the SSD maybe?

RAM would not work:
i5-6300 DDR4, AMD5-7640U DDR5

If the SSD fits the OS should work, which version did you use?
Newer Kernel is better for HW Support

I am actually afraid that, because I have NVidia drivers running, and Framework doesn’t have a GPU, then X will somehow be prevented from functionning

I would bet you have high odds of it booting. I would double check that bitlocker (full disk encryption) is turned off if Windows. I don’t think the graphics driver will give you any trouble. I’ve intentionally swapped a Windows hard drive back and forth between a AMD Graphics and nVidia machine quite a bit without issue.

i am not on Windows tho, as I said I am using Opensuse Tumbleweed with 6.8.5-1-default kernel and NVidia 470.239.06 driver

Thanks for pointing that out. I probably should have realized what Tumbleweed was. I’m only lightly familiar with Linux though I’m working on changing that.

Good luck, I hope it winds up being easy!
