Upgrading Display & What Else?

I’m planning on getting the new touch 2.8K display for my 13" 7640u that’s stock. But since I’ve got to open up the thing I figure I might as well upgrade some other stuff too.

Best I could come up with was to upgrade the webcam module.

I also seem to recall that swapping out the heatsink + fan for the AI version lead to some great improvements to thermals (though I’m not sure I want to do that).

I’m not interested in updating the following:

  • Bezel
  • Memory (for obvious reasons)
  • Mainboard

Anything else I should take a look at?

The haptic trackpad maybe? Along with the new chassis.

New chassis houses a much larger battery (21% over 61wh, 34% over 55wh and even more if your current battery is not at 100% health)

Good ideas. I’m happy enough with the current trackpad. And even though the 55Wh battery is probably limiting for a mobile user I mostly just use my laptop around the house. So it’s good enough for me.

Not really worth the investment to upgrade the chassis.

Maybe get the 4.0kg hinges?

My stock 7640u have 3.5kg hinges that easily moves when I move the laptop. Can’t imagine the wonderful synergy between that and a touchscreen.

Interesting! I didn’t even know they sold ones that require more force. Thanks.

I’ve been using the 2nd Gen 3.5kg hinges with the touch 2.8K display without issue. Maybe @Zack1 has the 1st Gen 3.5kg hinges? YMMV but the trade off against easy one-hand opening for stiffer hinges doesn’t seem worth it to me.

There aren’t any first gen 3.5kg hinges - first gen are 3.3kg, mine is 2nd gen 3.5kg.

Recently I’ve been moving the laptop around more and the 3.5kg hinge falls flat really easily if I pick the laptop in a wrong way. Outside of that I didn’t really have issues with it.
