Elijah here, I’m a community technologist. I’m always looking to understand means of production that are more aligned with being in harmony with nature and discovering framework is the latest in that journey.
Deep diving solutions like framework allows me to get the relevant information for myself, my community and the communities and organizations I support.
I have scoured all things framework for a few weeks now and have finally settled on what model I want. I tried to buy one locally that is no longer available and I will pursue one for the community market next.
My name is Tyler, I currently work in sales in the music industry (love my job, ask me more ). I have an academic background in the healthcare industry but didn’t stay there, and while I’ve tried and failed to learn programming to the point of being as professional as a lot of you I still know enough to know why something like the Framework ecosystem is important. I tried my first foray into Linux a couple years ago and loved it, and after having a CyberpowerPC Tracer V that failed on me due to part scarcity and anti-right to repair design ethos (mobo death), and after tinkering with various Dell laptops I’ve owned over the decades, I’ve decided my life’s too short to keep indulging in bad hardware choices and worse software ecosystems (Win11).
I just bought a 16 with the Ryzen AI 7 350 about a half hour ago. My chief aim is to use this laptop for serious music production and live show control in Linux, along with lighter gaming since I need to do less of that these days. After trying many distros I’ve enjoyed EndeavourOS the most, and I plan on using primarily Bitwig with native plugins and my hardware synths. Being a lifelong Ableton user I think Bitwig is criminally slept on and is way more than the Diet Ableton it’s written off as. Considering my job there’s a lot of the music software ecosystem I have access to that I’m sacrificing with this build, but after a lot of due diligence I think this will be worth it - if absolute worse comes to worse I can dual-boot I guess but I really don’t want Win to ever touch this system. The ethos of this laptop and its company is fantastic, and the community here looks swell too, so I’m excited to take the plunge and see what happens.
Nice to meet you all, and if you’re a musician send me links to your work!
Just getting started in Framework/Linux (in a GUI environment) after over 4 decades using Apple products (which I still do but am frustrated with recent developments).
Computer DIY or inner workings are not my hobby, just want to do routine digital things in a reliable and visually pleasant way, as I am a visual kind of person.
A fellow Linux user group member has a 13" Framework and recommended it. At first I tried installing Mint and Ubuntu on a MacBook air 13" with Intel T2, but it was continual problems with hardware so I went to a machine built for Linux.
I love that we’re spinning off into Open Hardware as well!
Just got my first Framework, it’s a 12: i3, 32GB RAM, 2TB WD, Debian, netinst, KDE with Windows 11 Pro in Virtualbox… it’s working really sweet, love the stylist too!
New in getting a Framework, but have been very interested in getting a Framework laptop for quite sometime. Now I was able to acquire a used DIY edition of the Framework 12 (i5, 16gb RAM, & 1TB Storage) at a very decent price. I plan to use for studying towards doing x-ray.
Been happy with it today (yes I just got it in my hands). The driver bundle was great no need for to install an intrusive app. I was able to find the original wallpapers for the fw 12 but decided to use the fw 13 pro’s wallpapers of 6 for the lock-screen and 7 for the desktop.
Thanks to an older previous community post on getting to change the output of the f12 gear icon. I was able to have regedit value set to the Calculator app. Originally thought to have it set to the Settings app but then A thought popped in & asked how can I bring up the calculator.
I’ve been interested in Framework since I saw them featured on LTT years ago, but I never had the money for one.
Until the Framework 13 Pro announcement, I didn’t really want something newer than the now 13 year old laptop I took my programming classes with. We have computer at home.
The cheap displays, serviceable at best trackpads and four hours of battery life on most laptops under 800-1000 euros were not attractive in the least, especially combined with the difficulty of getting anything more specific than an SSD or a wireless module.
Fast forward to May, and the 13 Pro appears to tick all my boxes: nice chassis that doesn’t bend the moment you pick it up, long travel keyboard, large trackpad with better usability, great display, and very long battery life; backed by five years of happy customers, with the assurance that I would actually be able to use it for five to ten years, not just out of necessity but because I’d want to.
So anyways, I’m in Batch 8 being very (im)patient. Really looking forward to comfy programming on the couch or wherever.
Hi! Technical Artist in Game Development industry, 8years in experience. Long term windows user that ditched it 3 months ago for Apple and Linux. I like both platforms. Waiting for my Framework 13 Pro preorder, which will be my first Framework laptop ever!
I’m a Product Owner and AI Enthusiast. My long time loved Thinkpad T460s screams for a replacement and since my brother in law introduced me into FW, I’m going for the FW13 Pro AMD AI 300 Series. Exciting times
Full time mechanical engineer, car enthusiast, all around tinker-er, and ski instructor turned snowsports management. I needed a new “boots on the ground” laptop/tablet for this ski season that’s small enough to throw in a (larger) jacket pocket quickly and bring with me on the mountain while lessons are out. Repairability is a huge plus since it’s likely to get snowed on, rained on, and dropped at some point. Framework 12 looks to fit the bill, and with stylus support I may even be able to keep my gloves on! Really looking forward to putting my gen 2 FW12 through it’s paces once it arrives!
I’m a hobbyist designer/animator and student of software engineering. I love retro games and intro animations. I own the Framework Laptop 13 Pro and am currently quite satisfied with it. I have autism and while lots of people see it as negative thing I’m quite happy that I have it.
I’m an MA Linguistics student eagerly awaiting my lavender FW12 (Batch 3!) to be ready to ship. Only another month T^T
I’ve been using a secondhand 2017 MBA for the past 8 years. It’s been running fine and has served me well, but I would never have chosen it had my friend not sold it to me for only $500. I’ve had the battery replaced once and it’s started losing keys, so I’m ready to move on to something that’s a little less of a gilded cage. I can acknowledge the quality of apple computers, but I have no interest in a machine designed to pretend it’s aesthetic magic.
My boss has a FW13. They introduced me to the company after hearing me lamenting about planned obsolescence plaguing the tech world. I loved the commitment to repairablility and upgrading and after exploring the reviews, offerings, and alternatives decided to give it a shot.
For a bit of tech history, which I always think is fun, I’ve had a beast of a 17.5" 2007 Toshiba Satellite (with a built-in modem, DVD-drive, volume wheel, and single touch touchpad) which came loaded with Vista, very soon upgraded to 7, and a 2009 Asus EeePC which came with Windows7 Starter and I loaded with LinuxMint. Both technically still work, though the Satellite developed a habit of simply shutting off when it didn’t feel like playing video anymore and I’ve accidentally disposed of the power cable. I’m excited to return to the world of linux and to have a computer with a little more personality.
