Western Digital Drive Update Guide Without Windows/WD Dashboard

I don’t think this has been discussed yet but I updated some of my WD Black SN850X drives today using this method and ran into an issue where I would get a “Firmware Activation Failed” message. At some point retrying I finally got “Operation Successful” on one drive, but then failed on the next drive. I ended up just spamming updates to the drive as fast as I could and eventually it would take for each drive. Some of the drives required 20+ attempts while others worked after the 2nd or so try.

Not sure what the deal is but this happened on both a Framework 16 and 13.

Also, I’m not sure if this has been discussed yet, but the update utility doesn’t like the 13’s keyboard so you need an external keyboard…

Thank you so much for this post.

I’m running Windows 11 and was looking for a way to update the firmware on my WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe - M.2 2230 - 1TB.

My first step was realising I needed to go to the SANDISK page for the drive (https://support-eu.sandisk.com/app/products/product-detailweb/p/2285) and download SANDISK Dashboard.

While the tool did run - updating the firmware with the tool didn’t work (it would fail at 0%).

So I found the firmware update file using your method and manually update the firmware using the SANDISK tool (selecting the option to choose file) and it worked.

For those with my drive the links I used were as follows:
Step 1: https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdDashboard/config/devices/lista_devices.xml

Step 2: https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdDashboard/firmware/WD_BLACK_SN850_1TB/615400WD/device_properties.xml

Step 3 (file download): https://wddashboarddownloads.wdc.com/wdDashboard/firmware/WD_BLACK_SN850_1TB/615400WD/615400WD.fluf

Hello guys, tried to patch my WD Green 480 GB WDS480G2G0A-00JH30
Then I follow the instructions and faced with another problem. When I need to choose the proper drive, I see this:

And then I tried to update, but receive this error message ”Firmware Download Failed”. Both of them are not working. So i guess this program doesn`t see my SSD. In BIOS and Disk manager it displays as Sandisk Milpitas, please help anyone. Tried to flash in rom and not rom mode.

I’m assuming you’re following the guide at the start of this thread from July 2022 ( Western Digital Drive Update Guide Without Windows/WD Dashboard ).

Did you browse through the thread? There’s one thing you might want to try this solution Western Digital Drive Update Guide Without Windows/WD Dashboard - #4 by Edward_Felder

I would recommend reading through this whole thread.

Just be aware that your drive showing up as Sandisk Milpitas might also be a problem:

Dear all,
There is a new Firmware update for the WD_BLACK SN7100 NVMe SSD (WDS500G4X0E-00CJA0)

The new firmware version is 7619M0WD for the 500GB, 1TB and 2TB.
I could not find any information about this new version, except on this obscure french website: SanDisk propose le firmware 7619M0WD/7616H0WD pour le SSD WD_BLACK SN7100. Apparently it was released the 6th of March 2026.

I have successfully updated my SSD on Linux. So far no problem, I just fell that my laptop is booting Linux a bit faster than before.

I tried this script but got a Python error: Western Digital Drive Update Guide Without Windows/WD Dashboard - #47 by not_a_feature

So instead, I ended up following these instructions using nvme: Update firmware WD Black SN770 firmware on Arch Linux · GitHub
They are actually very close to the one shared above: Western Digital Drive Update Guide Without Windows/WD Dashboard - #54 by c.s

I wrote a small bash script doing the above - I did update both my SN770M and SN850X via it - if anyone wants to try it out and give feedback (I tested it only on CachyOS running on my Framework16 laptop) → GitHub - magicdude4eva/wd-nvme-fw-updater: Automated NVMe firmware updater for Western Digital SSDs on Linux. Features dependency checks, slot selection, and activation mode control. Compatible with Arch Linux and nvme-cli. · GitHub

Note: it is also recommended to upgrade the SSD firmware to the latest. Some WD SSDs cause sync-flood / reboots of the laptop. Upgrading the SSD firmware fixes the sync-flood / reboot problems.
