No disagreement there, the base color of the laptop is permanently intertwined with important structural components. You really can’t change the color for a reasonable price, so you have to pick wisely.
Maybe you could argue that it’s better for the environment to not enable buying every chassis color and change your laptop’s look every day of the week, but there’s also 30 different colors of USB-C cards, so clearly that level of customization is a priority for Framework.
Again I still love this company but benstor has a good point about this design contradiction
Not exactly where I was going for, but I certainly share the sentiment.
I merely tried to put the action of changing the colo(u)r against the cost this action would entail. Like this:
Positive
Negative
Your laptop has a new look.
You have 157€ less in your bank account
Now prices are highly subjective and incomes do vary. For some this might just be like replacing the hubcaps on your car.
I cannot emphasize enough: This is an individual decision. Everyone has to decide for themselves if it is worth it. This is not a commentary on how you (as the reader) might decide. I am merely stating the facts.
Sorry for digressing a bit, but I feel like I need to be extra precise with my statements…
Now directly on your point:
The FW12 comes in a variety of different colo(u)rs and I like that. My understanding is that we are coming from a not so distant past where all the laptops were either gray or black. And this is why I personally shy away from expecting(?) an easy and cheap way to change the look of the laptop. This doesn’t mean that I don’t like the idea though. In fact I find it very neat!
I opened the pre-order page right when it launched and agonised between lavender and bubblegum for so long that I ended up in batch 2 with lavender. I’ve since kept agonising about it and tonight I switched to bubblegum and am sitting pretty in batch 9.
Hi, I placed a pre-order for a Batch 11 FW12 i3 DIY with my own 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD but I am still undecided on color between black and gray. I saw one review that said the black shows fingerprints badly and I used to have an old Acer Chromebook in white that I thought just looked cheap. Has anyone seen both the black and gray in person and could offer some first-hand impressions? Cheers, Matt
