What if Framework laptops had snap-on modular display sections that could expand the screen?

What if the Framework Laptop display could be expanded with snap-on display sections?

I had an idea that I think could fit really well with Framework’s modular philosophy.

Instead of attaching another full-size monitor, imagine having small rectangular display modules that could snap onto the edges of the main laptop display.

You could add them to the left and right sides to make the display wider, or attach them to the top to make it taller.

And potentially, multiple modules could be combined to create different configurations depending on what the user needs.

The modules could use a standardized mechanical connection or magnetic pogo connectors with automatic electrical connection when snapped into place.

This could be useful for coding, CAD, engineering, video editing, productivity, simulations, and multitasking, while still allowing the laptop to remain compact when the extra display space isn’t needed.

I realize there would be engineering challenges such as weight, structural strength, connectors, power consumption, bezels, hinge loads, and software support, but I think the concept could be interesting for Framework’s modular ecosystem.

Would something like this be technically feasible, and would you actually use it?

I’d especially like to hear from the Framework community about the biggest technical challenges you see with this idea.

Somewhat related - rollable screens:

Thanks! Rollable/expandable screens are definitely related to what I’m thinking about.

The main difference with my idea is that I wasn’t thinking about making the primary display physically expand. Instead, the idea is to have small standardized rectangular display modules that can snap onto the edges of the existing display.

So the user could start with the normal display and add one or more sections when needed — horizontally, vertically, or potentially both.

Also for reducing strain on the hinges, a support stand could also be attached.

I certainly like the idea. I’ve migrated from a crumbling 15" laptop to a higher-res FW 13 Pro, and I do miss the missing screen space.

I have expressed the view in past posts though, where hardware innovation comes up, that I’d love for FW to polish what they have, rather than taking on too many projects and struggling to give sufficient time/energy to each.
