I’m envisioning a system where you plug in your system’s specs (or they can be filled out for you based on your order history) and then Framework’s site tells you all the little things that can be upgraded or improved.
Sure, it’s easy to point to the mainboard updates, but it’s difficult to pinpoint what else there is unless you’re paying close attention. Some examples:
I had almost forgotten that you could get a new and improved web cam because when I learned about it the first time I wasn’t interested.
There’s a new second gen USB-A card out there now that offers better power consumption. Never would have heard about that if I didn’t see it mentioned in a reddit thread.
Even learned about hinge side-grades you can do from a thread I started here.
That’s honestly a great idea. This’ll be great for non-techy people as well since they can just get a quick overview of what can be better without actually understanding the nuts and bolts.
Thanks! I get the upgrade itch from time to time and it was pretty tricky (at least for me) to know what’s been updated since I bought my Framework 13 two years ago.
feels kinda against their ethos. the brand’s all about being hands on and in-control of our devices… i think it’s better if people do their own research and decide themselves if they really want to upgrade
whether they do a deep dive and learn all the technical things or just ask people like us “how do i get better bluetooth”, that seems better and more aligned with framework and DIY to me
i completely get where ur coming from tho. i think maybe a better thing would be a really easy to use and in-depth database/wiki thing that’s super interlinked and shows exactly how every component works with each other. framewiki.net is already well on the way there

To me, Framework having an official page where one can go to see what they can upgrade on their current Framework enhances this idea. It’s opaque right now because not everything in the store is an upgrade and for some of the smaller, less advertised items it’s really unclear what version you’re currently using without opening up your laptop.
I have absolute zero idea which version I have. But heck, I wouldn’t mind having louder speakers. Doing some digging, some Framework 13s came stock with the louder ones (like the Core Ultra Series 1 models) and some have the “original”. I’d be kindof upset if I spent pizza money on a new set of speakers thinking they were louder when I already had the loudest ones available.
I am reading this as “it may cause people to upgrade stuff they would have pretty happily lived with if they did not know upgrades were available.”
While there is some merit to that I think having a part of the page like the configurator where you can plug in what you currently have and see other options would be pretty neat and be a market differentiator probably worth it.
I really like this idea as well and it seems more people would like to have this judging by the various topics.
Don’t think a wiki is going to cover this no matter how detailed as it’s not build for that and it would require a separate sort of Inventory section in the account as someone can order components from other vendors and they need to be entered/plugged in to figure out the upgrades available (like wifi module)
Maybe with an API of the Parts page and a whole lot of details about each part, it would be possible for a third party to build it
