# Which USB 3.2 Type is used?

Somehow customer support repeatedly could not tell me which exact type is used. They only tell me
“As mentioned in our previous email, the USB-C ports support USB 3.2, USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) and DisplayPort Alt Mode.”
This does not anwer whether it is **USB 3.2 Gen 1x1, USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 or USB 3.2 Gen 2x2**?
Can yomeone from Framework tell me what I unknowingly pre-prdered?

Most likely 2x1, maybe 2x2 pretty much definitely not gen1 (they’d have to go out of their way to do that).

The naming sheme was just to easy before:
USB 3.0 → 5 GBit/s
USB 3.1 → 10 GBit/s
USB 3.2 → 20 GBit/s
Now:
USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 → 5 GBit/s
USB 3.2 Gen 2x1-\> 10 GBit/s
USB 3.2 Gen 2x2-\> 20 GBit/s
So with the old sheme it would be 20 Gbit/s. But like @Adrian_Joachim said it is most likely at least 10 Gbit/s.

I think it’s because they tried to introduce an alternate USB 10Gbps that afaik would be easier to implement but would be slower (wikipedia says Gen1x2 is 8b/10b encoding vs 128b/132b)
They later canned the standard so… Good on you USB-IF for ruining your tiers for nothing

Your support told me that the right side of the ports is even better: 3.2 2x2, correct?

I think due to the sheer confusion caused by inconsistencies of the USB3.? standard, ~~just saying “USB 3.2” isn’t very professional. The marketing names are SuperSpeed or SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps for 5Gbps, SuperSpeed+, SS+ or SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps for 10Gbps and SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps for 20Gbps~~
Edit: it’s [simpler](https://www.usb.org/sites/default/files/usb_data_performance_language_usage_guidelines_jan_2024.pdf), USB 80Gbps, USB 40Gbps, USB 20Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 5Gbps

Would be great to have even only two of ports with 3.2 2x2.
I would like to connect the laptop to 4k 120hz monitor. I know that the device has it’s trade-offs and it meant to be cheap but slow USB would be too much for me. In the case when all the ports would be slow, I even considered buying Macbook Air and iPad combo.
Btw, do anyone knows when we can see first reviews? On Batch 0 or could it be sooner? I look almost every day for a review or real-life pics, I was so hyped since when the FW12 was released.

FYI: There’s confirmation of the two USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 right-side ports in the newly updated KB: [Expansion Card Functionality on Framework Laptop 12 (13th Gen Intel® Core™)](https://knowledgebase.frame.work/en_us/expansion-card-functionality-on-framework-laptop-12-13th-gen-intel-core-S1UDIAsWel)
It also specifies DP 1.4 HBR3 on all 4 slots as far as display output goes.
