I finally got my Framework Desktop last night and put it together this morning. I downloaded the Windows install media, put on USB stick, booted and started the setup process.
When I get to the Select a location to install Windows 11, Disk 0 shows Unallocated Space, 0B, and when i select I get an error message that says Setup Does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through USB or IEEE 1394 port. The selected Disk if offline. To install to this disk use the Disk management tool to bring the disk online.
However, Bring Disk Online is greyed out.
I looked in bios but couldn’t see where the ssd is detected.
Any pointers?
Not quite enough info there, but what i’m guessing happened:
You mentioned a windows bootable drive, but what are you installing to?
I had issues trying to install to a used NVME drive from my old PC.
A fix is to download a linux installer to a USB drive, live boot from that and wipe the drive you want to install to.
Then the windows installer should work fine
Ok, this is embarrassing but I thought I ordered with ssd but I guess I didn’t.

There are unfortunately a lot of commong things not displayed in the setup, detected nvme being one of them.
Start Windows Setup, after selecting keyboard layout you should be able to open command prompt with shift+f10. Then enter:
diskpart
list disk
You should see your nvme as well as your installation media - if only the installation media is visible then the nvme was not detected - if it is detected select it with its number, it usually should be zero.
select disk 0
And here comes the dangerous part of wiping any boot/partition information from the disk
clean
Now you can reset or just exit the prompt and continue with setup and hopefully your nvme will now show up properly.

More than once I wondered why a system wouldn’t power on, then I noticed the power plug I forgot to plug in…

I’ve done that myself, don’t worry

The LTT review (investment disclosure) forgot to put an SSD in before trying to boot, so you are in good company. Honestly you have to have forgotten an SSD at least once to start remembering to put an SSD in. Also forgetting thermal paste, and I forgot to install my CPU one time….
