Hello everyone,

I think there’s something wrong with the wake/hibernation process with my Framework.

After enabling hibernate as a power mode, the laptop will occasionally freeze and become unresponsive while awake after idling. Right now it could go as common as once or twice per day.

  • The lid closing doesn’t register and the keyboard and mouse stop reacting.
  • After a forced restart, I can’t find any events in Event Viewer or Reliability Monitor that detail the time of the freeze, either before or around when the on-screen display clock froze, only registering that I’ve forced it to restart after.
  • A few times when I intentionally left it frozen then force restart, it still logs lots of background events, almost as if the laptop is idling fine.

Disabling hibernate helps, not all but most of the freezes. Without hibernate it rarely happens and seemed to only occur when it sleeps with the lid down and can’t wake up.
I want to have hibernate as a power option. Unlike what’s reported in [Solved] - 11th gen FW13 freeze on battery power , this occurs either on battery or plugged in, on Energy Saver or Normal power mode. Only change I’ve done to power settings in BIOS is I capped the battery at 80%.

I reached out to Microsoft before, but they believe the issue is hardware or driver-related, quote:

In your case (freeze only after enabling hibernate), the issue almost always comes down to one of these 4 components:
Graphics driver (VERY common).
Chipset / Power management firmware.
Storage driver (SSD / NVMe).
BIOS / UEFI firmware.
Based on your description, this issue appears to be related to a low-level power transition (hibernate/resume), which typically involves system firmware (BIOS) and device-specific drivers. Since these components are customized by the device manufacturer, further investigation and resolution would require their support.

I have updated to latest BIOS and driver bundles. That’s usually my go-to attempt to fix the problems.
Most of these problems are observed repeatedly after I swapped to the SN580 SSD and not before. But I have no idea how those might be related.

In addition, other problems I suspect might also be related to wake issue:

  1. The trackpad stops working after waking up. Uninstalling and reinstalling the hardware in Device Manager doesn’t seem to help. I remember I can’t find the trackpad in device manager in those times anyway, but reinstalling the entire driver bundle does make the trackpad work again.
  2. An external monitor won’t be detected. A mouse and keyboard connected through the same USB-C cable work fine, and Device Manager detects the monitor, but the laptop sends no signal, settings don’t show the monitor, and the screen won’t show another display on the sides (I usually do extend display). Yes, I’ve tried a different cable, tried a different monitor, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the monitor driver, tried uninstalling and reinstalling display driver (that just uninstalls display driver and I can’t see the display). Nothing seems to work except a restart. I’ve contacted Microsoft about this and they thinks it’s UEFI/hardware not waking up again. This is one problem Microsoft blames hardware/BIOS again.
  3. On the other hand, when engaging hibernate while connected to an external monitor. After disconnecting and waking up, the laptop still thinks there’s a monitor attached. Application windows and cursor can be moved to the other “monitor”, in Settings and device manager, no other monitor or related display settings can be found. Even after connecting to a monitor, the display settings in Settings will still be unavailable but it will function properly.
  4. Speaker sometimes doesn’t work after waking up. I cannot find the speaker in device manager, cannot select to install or uninstall drivers, installing driver bundle doesn’t work, connecting external or bluetooth audio won’t work. The entire volume option in the task bar is just “X”. Sometimes after going sleep/hibernate again, it will wake up properly.
  5. Sometimes waking up hibernate will wake up to a black screen after the framework boot screen. Forcing a restart, only error events noted are termination of dotnet.exe and failure to access a .NET Host programme. However, I cannot be sure if these are the cause or result of the issue.
  6. Sometimes when connecting to power, Windows will give a “USB device not recognized” or “Power surge on the USB port” warning, with repeated connected and disconnect sound, sometimes with repeated warning popups. This could continue when there’s nothing connected to the laptop, even sometimes when I removed the expansion cards.
  7. Randomly, for the first time a few days ago. The laptop just doesn’t connect to any keyboard or mouse. Storage and USB sticks can be registered, mouse and keyboard just will not be registered, no connection sound, no device in device manager. It didn’t fix itself until after a few restarts.

Hi, I recommend contacting Framework support if you haven’t already and reporting all these symptoms. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to help you, sorry.

I see, thank you. I wanted to ask for opinions before contacting support.
