I am a current senior in High school and I have saved an order for a new framework 13 with
Ryzen AI 9 HX 370
64 gb of DDR5 5600
2TB of storage
I was wondering if this would be sufficient to run programs for Mechanical Engineering students like Matlab, Fusion 360, Inventor, Solid works, and so on.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
As a (now senior) Mechanical Engineering student, this will be more than enough for everything you are going to need (IMO). My coursework has mostly needed Matlab, Solidworks, and Ansys, and I have never had any problems with both my original (i7-1165G7, 16GB GDDR4, 2TB SSD) and my upgraded CPU (Ryzen 7 7840U, 96 GB GDDR5, same 2TB SSD).
Combined with the upgrade-ability and repair-ability of this bad boy I have been more than happy with it.
The fact that the AI 9 370 will have some not half bad iGPU performance is also a nice plus
As a student I would more be concerned about Laptop sleep/hibernation issues or the waking in the bag ones rather than performance.
Sure it might be solvable but if you’re not willing to invest a lot of time in it, I would suggest to look for other brands…
Eh, whenever I super occasionally encountered the issue I never noticed a terrible battery drain from it. Additionally, I’ve found in a worse case battery scenario, I am always close enough to an outlet where its never a big deal.
I definitely think that the repair-ability, upgrade-ability, and supporting the framework ethos is very well worth it as a student. It has definitely saved me money in the long run when I upgraded to the 7840U instead of getting a new laptop this year (and I only upgraded because i wanted a more capable iGPU for gaming)
Bonus: I was able to create a small “cyberdeck” by fixing up a Framework Mystery Box drop of a laptop chasis with my old motherboard.
Fellow going to be Mechanical Engineer what would you recommend about framework 12 for engineer although not as powerful but I think I can connect a egpu with it when I need to do hard core 3d modeling on solid works plus having a stylus would make it a table useful for taking note and stuff what is your opinion on this suggestion
