Yet another 3d printed abomination of a computer

Good evening all.

I present to you…The Framework 13 Mullet Promax! (yes the name needs workshopping i get it)

Business in the front:

Party in the back:

Disclaimer: If you look too closley at the print quality your eyes may or may not be permanently damaged. Look at your own risk.

Ok so this is 4th? 5th? 4th? 3d printed project of mine. I dont know why I do it honestly. I enjoy it but fark is it a lot of work when your already trying to work every hour of the day n night just to get by…

Anyway, the goal: I like you, love the idea of a modular computer, but also am obsessed with gaming. (literally only like one game, am I even a gamer?) And the biggest issue with a teeny tiny processor is A) no dedicated GPU and B) it gets as hot as boiling water in a heartbeat. So the answer to A is to install oculink, which introduces the question of where? (no do not talk to me about usb4, I am not a child) and the answer to B is MOAR FANS!

Occa’s:

MOAR blowers:

Oh I forgot to mention, this is a battery folded underneath motherboard orientation case, as per Shadow Chasers post here:

The idea is to create depth in the case so that fans such as these or a laptop cooler (with an adapter to the opening) can pump air to the actual right side of the mobo where the small sun is operating, rather than ineffectually cooling the bottom of a mobo like every other laptop/laptop cooler combo does.

This idea came about as Ive been using this for some time:

But would often get called in to meetings in which I would have to appear at immediately with all presentable information on my screen at a size only small rodents could possibly read. While this previous version worked well, as I have a 49" 1440P screen at home, and a screen at work that powers the whole shebang and also operates as a hub for peri-ferals.

So reinvent the wheel it was. Also, oppurtunity to go outrageous semi flurescent green/yellow.

At home I have my own egpu design with a reasonably priced RTX 3070:

And with it, yonder results were obtained:

The development of this print was a total nightmare of a shitshow, and thank god I got given a Creality K1 Max for xmas, because otherwise it would have taken forever to print and would not looked this good (such as it is). I couldnt be bothered making the see through bits more see through (using PVB) by the time I made seven test fits sections for just the top plate fit, and printed the whole print unsuccesfully 5 times. Out of that came the idea to switch to see through filament midway for the lights, so silver lining there I guess.

From the start of project 1 back in 202 something I have sacrificed to the god of poorly managed plans: 1 x 3060ti, 1 x 1280P motherboard, 1 x soldering iron, 1 x coolermaster PSU, 1 x 500w hdplex PSU, 1 x Onedock egpu (I replaced it, but I use my Ogre more often (see my first project)). I have suffered multiple lacerations from craftknives cutting towards myself, and burns from soldering irons I didnt remember were still on. I really, really hope I no longer have this itch (I doubt it).

Thats enough blathering, here are more pics. CAD is still in Beta so is a while away from release on Printables (STLs are so rough and open) but will get there at some point:

Thoughts I guess?

Im really just posting this to try and get some closure…

Thanks for watching.

So you installed occulink instead of the SSD - where does the OS go then? Are you using a storage module for it?

Yup 2nd to last pic you can see a 1TB plugged in. Not my most favourite way to install a OS. Thinking the way go to the wifi slot and use usb A wifi when I need it, which is only at work. My adapter to fit the slot is too tall though so have got an extension version that could go next to the right speaker…

I was just thinking about the same thing! Use ssd slot or wifi slot for egpu.

I would like to make one myself too! It would be great if I could access the 3d models

The wifi M.2 slot wouldn’t be suitable for eGPU as it has much less bandwidth available iirc.

Apart from the usb4 slander this is amazing, excellent use of free will.

That is a big print! Love the forest of organic supports and the layer of clear. Impressive as hell, light pipes FTW. I’d feel badass carrying that around.

Is the bottom case slightly too short? It looks like it’s bending the keyboard cover up slightly?

But the thing I’m most curious about though … what is the one game?

Usb 4 is the bluetooth of the audio world. It causes me a hurty.

Dont get me started on usb 5.

Well spotted. I was naively thinking no one would notice. The speaker covers (made with cut up socks)(clean ones) have a clever 2 piece sock-et, that I cleverly didnt take the height of the second piece in to account for the speakers to sit flush over. Hence “its in Beta”, amongst other issues I carefully plastered over so you cant tell.

The one game is not particularly exciting, fairly predictable…

Wasn’t aware there was anything resembling usb5 going on jet.

Yes. Usb 5, on jets. you heard me…

fantastic build! I agree with what other’s are saying that adapting the wifi slot to be the ssd slot is the way to go. with some electrical tape the ssd+adapter should still fit in the chassis (at least it does with the coolermaster case).

what would really open up these sorts of mods more is a mainboard revision that puts another M.2 slot somewhere else on the board even if it is a chipset-connected, 2230 slot.

There is no chipset but at least the amd boards have 8 unused pice lanes.

My daughter had an HP Probook 430 G7 and I was surprised to find it had space for a SATA HDD and connector. That would work potentially. But Framework wont be changing nuthin about the 13 mainboard. Its gotta retrofit everything previous and in to the future in order for this idea to work. Theres nothin wrong with using Wifi slot. Spolier but you dont need blazing fast M.2 speeds. Nobody needs to load in to game 9 seconds faster than the competition. Sata speed is fine. USB C drive speed is fine. The biggest downside to usb drive is that the computer sometimes thinks its disconnected for no good reason…

Wifi via usb is fine for most use cases, its just not amazing fast or have range. Ive gamed plenty on mobile network 4G and thats at least comparable with wifi speeds. the biggest drama has always been the city I was in had awful mobile speeds. The hotel will also have awful internet speeds, but hopefully less and less as time goes on.

This is such a cursed testament to man’s hubris. I LOVE IT.

Also for those who are wondering, the game is BF6, and because synthetic tests dont mean shit on egpu’s I get about 100-110fps on low with dlss set to performance on 1440P. So its ok, but its only a 3070…I feel like I should be getting 130-140…
