I got a batch 1 Ryzen edition a year ago, after my previous Dell was finally out of its 4 year extended warranty (the piece of junk had 10-15 replaced parts, and 3 system exchanges, all covered under warranty rather than accidental protection aka Dell’s fault), and never looked back. I loved everything about it.
Sadly, I gather you here today to inform you that this poor unfortunate Framework was involved in an automotive accident after I stupidly left it on my roof and drove away without thinking, with it only falling off once I got into an intersection, presumably being destroyed, but definitely never being seen again. I thought the sound when it fell was my car, a pitiful being who’s tortured unrepairable voice had become white noise to me, but when I got home and saw my bag empty, I knew what had transpired. I rushed back to save my poor mechanical baby but alas, the crime scene was already scrubbed, and my Framework was nowhere to be found, not in nearby buildings nor any lost and found. My only solace being that I could be assured it was a quick death, falling in an intersection, it must have been quick (and hopefully not allowing any bad actor to retrieve my lost data). Join me in remembrance of this angel, taken from us too soon.
(Jokes aside disclaimer: In case it wasn’t clear from the over-exaggeration, no person was in any harm or even danger, just my laptop is broken/lost, the “automotive accident” was my laptop getting run over, not an actual car accident. And don’t worry about me financially, I’m just finishing my last university term and will be getting a job soon anyways, and able to borrow my dad’s laptop for my last exam. Sucks though cause I hadn’t set up a proper backup system yet, so I lost a lot of personal data. All university related things on their cloud though. Oh, and you already know once I get that job my next laptop will be another Framework.)
So sad to hear about a fallen soldier who thought they were on lookout duty only to be given the journey of its life at speeds it thought only reserved for local network traffic.
I am imagining your brave scout crying out, “My people need me! I must goooo…” as it skittered across the asphalt on its mortal journey to the recycling gods.
Pour one out for the hardest system crash your laptop ever experienced
I have some doubts about it being destroyed completely. Depending on your speed when crossing the intersection it may have flipped and the display might have almost ripped off during the fall. This is my imagination.
Because the case is aluminium it might withstand a bit. But definitelly has a serious inner damage.
I’d recommend using a bitlocker next time (if not done before) cause that would make it harder for people to unlock your “drive” to access data stored on it.
And to be honest: I don’t backup regularly too. Mainly because I do it manually instead of using the very simple Windows Backup Utility (which only duplicates causing a huge amount of duplicated data overtime) and because I almost never have new critical data on my main computer drive that is worth backupping.
Cloud backup might be great…I pesonally am just not a huge fan of it since I watched a video about thieves being able to remove your iCloud access for example
thus I personally rather prefer backupping on 2 local external harddrives (even if 1 backup drive breaks you still have another left).
I also thought about maybe buying one of those “AirTags” from Apple and put one into my laptop bag with my Framework laptop in it as I heard they are some kind of Tracker to locate your one Airtag (not sure whether there’re Trackers of other brands too) which might have made it easier for you to find your laptop again.
Just thinking (no judgement).
But that’s just my opinion and thought about sharing it. You’ve got my pity for what happend though. I wish you better luck next time and that this won’t happen to you ever again.
