[SOLVED] Adrenalin install, black screen, full fans, unresponsive. Please help

Framework 13 AMD - standard gpu. Tried installing latest Adrenalin. I got a black screen, fans are running full speed and the laptop is unresponsive. I am traveling and don’t have the chassis screwdriver. Any ideas how to shut down, reboot, or get my laptop back to functional?

I placed a support ticket but it’s Sunday evening late. I presume the battery will eventually die and i can try to boot into bios in the morning. Any ideas what settings in bios to help / try get me to boot and other suggestions?

I was able to shut down, reboot and install the Framework 13/16 driver package from the Framework website. I am now getting “AMD Crash Defender has detected an issue with your display driver…” and booting takes a very long time.

Note: Bios is 3.05

I’ve come across the DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller by Wagnard) which seems like it was made for this kind of issue, but hesitant to run it without confirmation it won’t mess up my laptop worse.

You’ll need to use DDU to remove the graphics driver. Ideally, you should boot into the Safe Mode before using it. After it’s done running, boot into Windows as normal then run the Framework Driver Bundle.

at least FW16 has bios setting for iGPU Memory, if you switch it to gaming, then you should be able to use the latest adrenaline drivers. here is link to relevant post FRWK16 - AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.9.1 - ISSUES - #85 by Machine

Welcome to the community @Michael_Seifert!

The latest drivers from AMD for the last half of the year have been a dice roll for lots of users. Unless they have a feature you must have in your laptop sticking with the latest Framework driver bundle is suggested.

While it may not have the absolute latest drivers to date it has been tested by Framework before they put it in the driver bundle.

Just be prepared for a scenario just as you experienced when you are installing drivers outside what has been tested to work with Framework devices. While it may sound silly; having a current full system backup is always a good idea to roll back to if things go wrong. There are lots of free or quite inexpensive tools that will save lots of time!

I used DDU to uninstall drivers in Safe mode, but when I try to install the Framework driver package (still in safe mode) after reboot, it says I must run in Admin mode - when I am alreasy running from an Admin cmd prompt window. Tried from explorer as well with same results. Should I try to install not in Safe mode? Different solution?

Solution was to boot back into Windows in normal mode (not Safe). For some reason it won’t run in Safe mode,

Used DDU to remove driver and reinstalled and everything seems to be back to normal. Warning to everyone to ignore Adrenalin’s offer to update the driver. I never have had compatibility issues on my PC before with graphics drivers (NVIDIA), but live and learn.
