Yep, you are right. I would not dare to attach those dots anywhere near the hinges to avoid such greetings from Sir Isaac Newton you mentioned. 
Sticking those tiny dots in the far, upper corners, a gap is hardly noticeable when the lid is closed. If otherwise, I would have a bad feeling and removed them immediately.
When traveling, I slide the Framework 13 in a hardcover sleeve, and the sleeve goes then into my backpack. Besides, my Framework 13 is less than a year old, equipped with the reinforced lid (top cover).
A soft cloth is probably the best solution to prevent those marks on the screen and not running into danger damaging the display.
