Can I plug a docking station into the GPU?

Can I plug in a docking station in the usb c port on the back of the GPU? Or do I have to just plug it in to a regular c port on the side. It’s going to be at least a month before I can get home to get the delivered laptop at my house.

I know that you can use a display port card on the GPU but can you use the HDMI?

The port built into the back of the GPU expansion bay is really only for Display out. Though it does also provide basic USB (USB 2.0). So if USB 2.0 speed are enough for whatever you wish to add, perhaps a couple dongles for a mouse, keyboard, 2FA Security Key, etc, then it may work. You’ll need to use a side port for USB PD (laptop charging).

Yes, you should be able to plug the docking station into the USB-C port on the GPU. It should work just like the regular USB-C ports on the side for most devices. For the HDMI, though, that’s usually just for direct display output, not for docking stations.

Yes, I had a dock plugged into the back but you have to power the laptop from the side. If you want to only have one USB-C connection, just use the side for everything. If you use the direct GPU connection, the laptop will try to run everything on the dGPU where if you use the side connection it will balance load between integrated GPU and dGPU. Also I recommend using a 90W-100W charger to keep fan speeds down. It tricks the firmware into keeping things quiet. The 180W adapter gets you full performance but it also lets those fans scream. I was using the back, now have since moved to the side and everything works perfectly.

That’s what I suspected but it doesn’t hurt to have it confirmed. Thanks

Yes, I’m aware that you can’t plug in a docking station via hdmi. I was asking if the port in question worked with the hdmi expansion card rather than the display port expansion card as I plugin to a tv rather than a monitor.

I’m curious, if I use a 100w charger will it keep the battery fully charged?

It will as long as you aren’t hitting the GPU and CPU constantly like playing a demanding game. If playing a demanding game, you will need more power to prevent the Battery from draining.

I can confirm that HDMI works with the back USB C port on the dGPU Expansion Bay Module. I originally though HDMI was all I needed for my external display needs and forgot to buy a DisplayPort Expansion Card (main benefit is 4k 120hz).

I plugged it into the back USB C port and it can at least output 4K HDR (I forgot to check the refresh rate).
