Framework idea: Exo-Core — turn your old mainboards into hot-swappable compute blades!
Slide your laptop board into a desktop/rack enclosure, instantly pool CPU/RAM/GPU with retired boards for seamless rendering & heavy tasks. No more e-waste, just a growing personal cluster. Zero-downtime handoff when you get home.
Maindboard cases already exists to reuse old mainboards. Both a pre-made from Framework and a number of 3D-printable cases, one of them also being from Framework. You say nothing on how your idea is supposedly better. Honestly gives the feel of AI, lots of words, says little of substance.
Hey, thanks for the feedback.Yes, standalone mainboard cases already exist — I own a couple. But that’s not what Exo-Core is about. This is a unified hot-swappable blade system where your active laptop mainboard physically slides in like a cartridge and instantly joins a resource pool with your retired boards. The dream was toolless insertion + seamless workload handoff (rendering, encoding, etc.) without closing apps — turning the whole thing into a living personal cluster the moment you get home. The accessibility part was important to me. I’m disabled with limited hand dexterity. In the dream it was effortless — just a satisfying click, no screws, no cables, no fiddly connectors. That’s the part that felt magical. It’s not meant to replace existing cases. It’s the next evolution: a proper Framework blade chassis with dynamic pooling.Appreciate the honesty though. Happy to hear more thoughts if you see the difference I’m going for. And yes my ideas are My own i do use ai to translate that into text thats all due to. Hand limitations .
Oh so each time you upgrade your laptops mainboard your server core get more oomph and can do more!!! I like it..
and if it could take graphics modules as well even better
