Faint, high-pitch, noise when using trackball

Hi all,

Just got a wired trackball mouse.

Only when using the actual trackball on the mouse (not the other buttons/scroll wheels), the framework laptop emits a very faint but high-pitched noise that is of the same duration as the duration of my manipulation of the trackball.

Upon starting the trackball movement, the noise is somewhat louder and fades off into an even fainter noise so long as I keep moving the ball without any pauses. Once I stop moving the ball, the noise dissappears.

No other mice/devices lead to this noise and it is coming from the laptop, not the mouse.

Not worried, just curious as to what could be going on.

Cheers!

Trackballs normally use the same type of optical sensors that mice do. Those sensors often go into a lower power mode when no movement is detected. You can see this in mice because the sensor’s illumination will dim a bit, move your finger in front of it so it sees movement & it brightens. It sounds like, for some reason, your tackball is causing the laptop usb power circuity to make noise only during the sensor’s higher power state. Modern switch-mode power supply circuity is known to sometimes make a high-frequency noise. I have a Belkin USB phone charger which I can’t tolerate close to my bed due to its high-frequency noise.
