Windows 11 (Both before and after installing KB5046617 update)
Framework 13 AMD 7040
Antlion Audio ModMic USB 2
Regardless of which USB-A port I plug the ModMic into:
USB-A port on the USB-A expansion card on the back right expansion slot.
USB-A port on the USB-A expansion card on the front right expansion slot.
A USB-A port on my Anker 553 USB-C Hub
Windows will freeze as soon as I plug it in.
Attempting to open the audio part of the windows 11 settings app will cause the settings app to freeze
Web browsers won’t be able to load pages anymore
The OS will hang on shutdown and not be able to shut down cleanly (stuck on black screen with computer still running) and require holding the power button down in order to shut it down.
I don’t have the right USB-C to USB-A adapter to test with but I suspect outcome would be the same. This is supposed to be a plug and play device that doesn’t require a driver.
So far there is no solution, other USB devices work fine in that port (USB NVME m.2 enclosure for example). Seems to be issue with
Just disable “AMD Audio CoProcessor” under “System Devices” in Device Manager
To Framework team:
THIS IS REALLY BAD! The laptop drivers you offer on your download page should not crash so hard it can destroy the OS permanently, including risk of data loss, just because someone plugged in a microphone!
ESPECIALLY IF IT’S TRIVIALLY PREVENTABLE!!!
Why am I so pissed off?
Because re-installing windows deleted grub… so now I have to go through the gooud aoould live boot … mount … luks unlock … chroot … update-grup song and dance again or lose all my data from linux partition… Just because AMD decided to compete with CrowdStrike in the market for top quality windows drivers…
Please do some QA on that crap before you upload it to your website!! Obviously “USB microphone” was not a test case of this driver…
Was facing the same issue here on a Framework 16 and was pulling my hair out until I found this thread! Thanks for sharing.
Completely agreed too that the approach to drivers is still a significant area of improvement for both AMD and FW going forward, lots of issues with basic scenarios like this do add up…
