Happy New Year (soon!). Hope to hear when press units are shipped!

Also interested to know if Framework/AMD will roll the unique Framework specific driver fixes into the general release so wonā€™t have to worry about getting the bundle version in the future.

I wonder becaus the Verge reported once they shouldnā€™t didnā€™t need any special drivers.

ā€œSpeaking of the GPU again, there are no gaming benchmarks to share yet, working fans or no. None of thatā€™s been optimized, though Framework says that standard off-the-shelf AMD Radeon drivers should work for its GPU ā€” special ones wonā€™t be required.ā€

Hereā€™s to a bright and happy 2024, and an (hopefully) amazing laptop for us all! :+1:

And this is why other companies arenā€™t transparent. Because people freak out about all these various things that happen before products actually ship. This is normal. The difference is this is normally not seen by the general public. I work for a company that ships backup software and appliances. All these various things that you see are normal. The big deal is to make sure that the physical hardware is solid. BIOS, firmware, drivers can all be updated later.

Same. Iā€™m exceedingly happy Iā€™m on batch 7. Iā€™m in no rush. And it allows for any bugs to get worked out. Both in assembly and drivers.

And only safety issues are recalled. All the other issues are only covered if they fail withing warranty.

The ā€œrecallā€ was more of a disagreement between tesla and regulators. most of them tend to be that for Tesla on how things should happen. Also doesnā€™t help that the current head of NHSTA is a big shareholder in a competing firm who insists only Lidar enabled FSD systems will ever be level 5 due to a pre seated bias.

Yeah, Iā€™ve watched Josh. Heā€™s good, but not my favorite.

Mainly because he recommends gaming laptops that have poor battery life and MacBooks that have zero upgradability/repairability.

Iā€™m really curious when the review units will be sent out (or if theyā€™ve already been sent). It would be neat to know when we start seeing this on youtube and tech sites.

Same thought. Iā€™m hoping that Iā€™ll be able to watch some reviews within the next week, that should be doable with some optimism ^^

Iā€™m sadly in batch 5 (saw the email in the evening), only upside is that I might dodge some early issues. I doubt there will be many, as FW seem to have really good quality control.

I need some content to sweeten the wait, lol

Nice spot!

Really hoping to see the reviews within the next week
On time for (AMDs) CES as well, but I doubt theyā€™ll mention Framework.

Thatā€™s impressive. 23% quicker than my i9-10920X desktop, with 4 less cores!

That geekbench result seems to suggest that itā€™s on-par or better than my Ryzen 9 5950x, which has double the core count. I highly doubt thatā€™s reflective of the real world performance, so Iā€™m not putting any stock into the geekbench scores.

https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/amd-ryzen-9-5950x

This site appears to aggregate cpu benchmarks, and it looks like the single core performance could be expected to be better, but not the multicore. This is a much more realistic expectation given the generational differences. Although, +5-13% will likely be difficult for most users to notice.

Perhaps indicative of models being in the hands of reviewers. Hopefully see some details soon.

Geekbench seems to be heavily influenced by RAM bandwidth, which would put the 5950X with DDR4 at a disadvantage. My Geekbench 6 multicore results are also too close together, I would not trust those a lot.
The TopCPU results for the 5950X seem to be a bit on the high side to me. Not impossible, but at least on my system not reachable with stock settings. I can get close with undervolting, PBO and absurdly high power limits. My cooler can sustain about 200W with 220W for a short time.

In Cinebench R23 with stock settings my 7640U is faster than a 3700X in single core and just a tiny bit slower in multicore, despite having two cores less. My 5950X is still slower in single core, but more than double the speed in multicore. Not really surprising, it chugs down 140W while doing so and has 16 cores. FW16 7840HS should have better multicore performance by having two more cores and more power and cooling to work with than my U so I would expect on the order of half a 5950X (or a full 5800X) from that for a lot less power used.

based on the previous updates, I expect a new email update by Wednesday/Thursday

Right, they essentially said preparing shippment email within two weeks of last update or new update about delays at 2 weeks from previous update
