Framework 13 black screen after bios changes

I have just finished assembling my new DIY framework 13 - ultra series 1. And when I power it on for the first time I got the no boot media. So i made my windows 11 install media ( USB-A stick), and when i inserted the usb and turned it on i just got at black screen. If i boot without the USB i get the no boot media, and can continue to the bios.
I tried this a few times, even changing to another usb port, but no change.

I read around the support forum and found a post that resembles my problem, a post that says they fixed it by disabling secure boot. So I tried that, but now I just have black screen no matter what. I have tried to reset the bios but either I am doing it wrong, or it has no effect.

So the status no is that the screen is just black when i power on, tried external monitor but it says no signal. Tried all the combinations for the bios/boot menu, but nothing worked. Everything “worked” before i disabled secure boot.

After some more digging and following this guide https://knowledgebase.frame.work/my-laptop-is-not-powering-on-ryQLXvQkt

It looks like memory error? I get green on 1-10,12 and red on 11 which i memory check. The post code is 01111110 - which is 7e if the convert I use is correct but that does not seem to be a standard code, so that is not much help.

The wiered thing if it is a memory error is that i work several times before i made changes to the bios and both 16 gig ram sticks show up fine in the bios.

  1. Try swapping the ram stick slots? It feels superstitious but it might work.
  2. Try with one stick at a time in whichever slot is considered the first slot on the ultra motherboard.
  3. Have you opened a support ticket?

One of the memory sticks is possibly defective. When you first power on the machine it does not thoroughly go through and test all 32GB of the memory. Odds are good one of the two does not have issues.

Now you just have to figure out which one it is. Disabling the secure boot likely does not have anything to do with the situation. It is possible that when it was trying to load the installer from the USB for Windows it got to a corrupted part of the memory and failed to display. Older operating systems just displayed text; almost all the newest installers all want fancy graphics.

You can reset the embedded controller by holding down the power button for ~20 seconds. As long as the power button lights up when you press it briefly it should be working normally though.

If you have not already done so, please start a case with support. They are the best resource for troubleshooting. We can give you what we know and have read from others; they have the best tools and knowledge to diagnose what is going on.

If it still is not showing a display; you might try to carefully disconnect the display cable from the mainboard AND the other end of the display cable behind the display. There have been a few reports especially of the 2.8K screen that had a loose display cable fresh from the factory. Reseating it correctly fixed the display issues. Let us know what turns up and welcome to the community!

I tried swapping the memory around and got to boot on one occasion I got to the boot screen but on restart it was back to black.

I talked with support and they say that my memory supports xmp, and since the laptop does not support xmp it will not work. So now I need to go out and buy some new memory.

So now i am farly sure the problem is not related to the screen, but the memeory or some bios setting that i changed when i saved changes or resat the bios. Since i worked fine on multiple reboots, and then just stopped when i restarted no usb inserted. So it went from booting into bios to no boot into bios on a restart after I saved changes.

They link to this article, which

a) Was really hard to find.
b) Sounds like it only relates to ryzen, unless you read it.
c) according to the timestamp, it did not exist when I ordered the laptop and ram.

I am a bit dissapointed that this information so hard to find? If I knew that xmp memory would be a problem I would have ordered something different.

This page might help you. It lists compatible ram.
There are different lists for each fw13 version, I hope I have linked the right version

Which make/model of ram do you have?
