My laptop has started to randomly freeze every 5 minutes. I have tried disabling AMD mes messaging in the kernel options. I have tried installing different GPU drivers. I have reinstalled POP OS. Nothing appears to be helping me fix this issue…

I got the following error in my kernel logs: amdgpu 0000:c1:00.0: Direct firmware load for amdgpu/isp_4_1_0.bin failed with error -2

Here is some of my log from journalctl

You most likely need a newer GPU firmware snapshot (specifically GC firmware).

The ISP missing firmware is a red herring though.

I’ve been experiencing the same issue on the 7840U, I’ve tried to set the video memory in BIOS to gaming and it’s still been crashing.

Similar issue described in this thread:

I am facing a similar issue on the 7040u platform.

A reply on this thread mentioned that their computer slowed down before crashing and I’ve experienced that as well but on Linux instead of Windows

I experienced the slow downs on Windows as well. Currently in exchange with the support.
At the moment I am running Windows 11 and installed the newest graphics drivers via “AMD Adrenalin” so far no crashes but that may be coincidence.

I really want to ditch Windows again and go back to Linux but so far it is the most stable solution.

I have been experiencing the same issue, I didn’t know what is going on. first I thought it was my Linux distro, so I replace it with another one, but then it happened again after like 30 minutes, and then replace it with another distro and same thing, I tried Linux mint 22.2, PopOS, ZorinOS, all of them based on Ubuntu of course, so unless Ubuntu itself is having issues, but I don’t think so, at that point I started suspecting the external hard drive, because each time it happened I was copying files from an external hard drive but then I started suspecting the laptop itself. I have the latest firmware, previously I didn’t have any issues with this laptop for months but now this is happening, it’s definetely some hardware issue or the firmware. I have the Ryzen 5 7640U version with 64 gb of ram

Are you still seeing this? my brand new laptop is doing this and is unusable out of the box due to it?

I had random freezes happening recently. Went down many rabbit holes trying to find the issue. In the end, it appears the “night light” feature in gnome was causing some kind of conflict with amdgpu’s PSR (a power-saving feature), especially in the mornings and evenings when gnome’s “night light” would gradually tint the screen. This may or may not be your problem. But for me, disabling PSR has been been a solid workaround so far.

If you want to give it a try, you can disable PSR with a kernel command-line flag by running sudo grubby --arg amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 --update-kernel=ALL and then reboot. (Note this command will only affect AMD GPUs.)

If that doesn’t help and you want to undo the change, you can undo it by running the same command but with --remove-arg ... instead of --arg ...

I also had the random freezing today, and I remember it happened last week. My desktop environment is Xfce. Does it also have conflict with AMD gpu?

I experienced this same thing. I ran Fedora 42 for a couple of months, but it has other issues that are undesirable, so I reinstalled Linux Mint 22 (When I would launch a ScreenConnect window[remote control software], I would get a popup asking me to share my screen. Apparently, its a Fedora thing, and it’s annoying). I was able to copy in my home directory, but as soon as I started installing programs I experienced a freeze in the window manager. The mouse cursor would still work, but the windows were locked up.

CTRL-ALT-(Fn)F2 gets you to a terminal window where you can log in and do stuff, so they computer isn’t specifically frozen. Thought it was Mint, so I went through and installed several other OS (Ubuntu 24, Zorin, Omarchy, Debian) and all of them lock up the same. Hoping that the post above about disabling PSR helps, but perhaps it’s just a firmware/driver issue with whatever is in the Debian repo?

I will say that I have Windows 11 installed on a 250G module, and it works as expected. Nice and fast, no issues.

I just reinstalled Ubuntu 24 and got everything copied over (the terminal window with rsync froze, so I moved to another terminal and just monitored with ps aux | grep rsync until it finished), but I assume when I boot it again into Ubuntu it’s going to freeze again. Also doesn’t seem to be tied to Wayland, because I installed XLibre and it does it there too.

I have Endeavour OS which is almost the Arch linux. In my case, the freezing totally lock the computer (or the screen, I should say). Totally no response to any input I can give. The only thing I can do is using the power button to turn off the machine.

My DE is Xfce, with X11.

It was happening to me with several distros, but it always happened when I was copying files from an external usb ssd, but it has not happened again ever since, so I’m suspecting it was the ssd.
