Framework 16 user review with LMDE 6

Hello everyone I just bought the Framework 16 laptop as a workstation replacement for my desktop from 2017 ( Ryzen 1800 X + 1080Ti). I am currently running LMDE 6 and everything seems to be working properly

I just wanted to tell every one the process of setting it up and things I needed to do to get everything right. I hope this is helpful to other people if they are having some issues

My system specs are as follows

For my HD I had a WD_BLACK 8TB SN850P NVMe M.2 SSD that I purchased from amazon and also the 2 TB SSD in the 2230 slot that came with the Framework 16.

The assembly was not too bad. I mainly followed the step to step instruction guide on the Framework website. The only issue I had was getting the track pad to sit flush with the chassis. I just had to play with it for a while before it sat properly

For installing the OS. I initially chose Linux Mint 22 Wilma since that is based on the latest Ubuntu LTS supported by Framework and I like the cinnamon DE. The install went perfectly fine and it seemed to be working properly. However when I was copying my video files and pictures from my external hd backup ( NTFS file system) the entire system seemed to freeze when large amounts of files were copied at once. I could not figure out a way to fix this.

Since Linux mint was not working. I switched to Fedora 21 cinnamon spin. It installed fine and all hardware worked properly. Hoever I just did not like the feel if this OS. I think the best analogy is frustration by a thousand small cuts just to get small stuff like videos , codecs and thumbnails working properly.

I finally decided on Linux Mint Debian Edition 6 ( LMDE 6). I have this on my Thinkbook and it is very stable and everything just works. I knew that there would be some hardware issues since the kernal is older. The install went beautifully and every thing seemed to be fine except for one error on the AMD GPU. I followed the instructions in these 2 links and after that the errors went away and the discrete GPU was detected and worked properly

Also I did not have any issues copying over 2 TB data from external HD.

Installing Steam was a chore. The Debian package from steam and the package in Linux mint store installed but would not launch from the panel , menu or desktop icon. It did start if launched through terminal and software store. I removed these and got the steam package from flathub which seems to be working fine and launched without any errors.

Starting steam and just being on the page to browse games or my library made the fans in the Framework 16 sound like a 747 was taking off and it was running very hot. This improved when I went into steam settings and disabled hardware acceleration options when browsing library / store

I also installed power profile daemon from the software center on LMDE. I believe this is version 1.2.1. With this the fan and heat issues resolved completely.

Games wise I made sure to add DRI_PRIME=1 %command% to the launch options. I have played path of exile , helldivers 2, deep rock galactic without any difficulty. They play normally and everything seems to work with gpu acceleration

Overall I am very satisfied with the laptop so far, it does everything I need it to do and hopefully it will last me next 5-10 years.
