I love the work you’re doing here. It’s amazing that I can finally control my fans on my FW laptop. I just have one question. What is the start menu and desktop shortcut for? When I run them, it just opens File Explorer.
I’m a software engineer at Descript - the transcription based video editing app!
So building apps is what I do for living…
Thank you, you’re very kind to offer that! For now, I don’t need any additional support and I’m treating this as a personal side project. I needed an app like this and nothing existed so here we are. I’m glad the app is useful for others as well.
That is very curious indeed. Support for this app (at this stage) would depend on if they ship it with the proper EC tool as well as the “framework_tool” cli. I’m hopeful though.
Unfortunately, I won’t have the new SoC available to me. I got this laptop not too long ago and don’t see myself upgrading unless there’s a very good reason.
Ahh, curious… The shortcuts were supposed to open the local served web app in the browser. Opening the explorer is a fallback method if Edge or Chrome is not found. Explorer is supposed to take you to your default browser and open the link though.
What browser do you use? What happens when the explorer opens?
I actually use Brave. When File Explorer opens, nothing happens. It just opens to the This PC tab. I’ve also completely uninstalled MS Edge from my installation of Windows and have set Brave as the default on everything, too.
I may have to look into it when it arrives sometime in November. I am absolutely not a programmer, but if there is something I can do to help/provide info regarding the new mainboard to see if this can still be used even with new 16 owners (of 300 series), please let me know.
Ok, sounds like your explorer.exe, which is a core OS component that also handles opening links, doesn’t have a default browser it can reference to. Could you please go to:
- Settings → Apps → Default Apps
And try to find the Brave browser and click on it. Then you should see an option at the top that says “make Brave your default browser”.
If you do these steps, it might fix it for you. If not, I can think of something else to fix this. Maybe add the Brave browser in the “search for browser” logic.
Yeah that’d be great. Since I don’t have access to the SoC, we’ll use your laptop to see if it works out of the box or maybe even with some adjustments. Excited for you! Upgrades are always fun! Did you order the whole thing or just the motherboard?
I checked and made sure Brave was set to default. I even manually checked and made sure every option was set to Brave, and I’m still getting the same results. I’ve just been opening Brave and pressing the bookmark I have set, so it’s not that bad of an issue.
That’s awesome! Now we need one for the Framework Laptop 13!
Just try it on Fw13. The EC and Framework_tool component should work.
I just ordered the mainboard and wifi7 card since the 300 series is compatable. I have wifi7 in my house but the 7940 isn’t compatible so I’m curious to see the potential difference in speed/latency compared to 6. I didn’t really see anything else I personally needed to swap out. Everything else is working fine for me.
Exactly! @PSierra117 is right! You should try it, technically Laptop 13 had EC tool way before the 16 so should work. You can always uninstall from the “Installed Apps” it if it doesn’t work.
I have a build for you to try. I’ve improved the browser handling and the shortcut logic. I can send it to you or you can wait for the next big release which will have it included
I’d be willing to try it out for you. What would you need to send it to me?
Here, this is a pre-release that has the shortcut fixes. See if it works for you.
After installing, delete the existing shortcut, and re-create the shortcut from the app.
Just tried it and it works perfectly! Thank you, and I’m glad I could help you improve it!
Glad it worked, thanks for helping improve! ![]()
@Kemal_Ozturk curious how simple this was to create? I will be swapping to the AI 9 370 when it ships in November (batch 1). I am no programmer, but was wondering if it would be pretty simple to translate something similar for the new board since you have already done the ground work. Obviously pending the release to see what it comes with, what would you need? How would such information be accessed?
